Within the framework of the visit of the Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade and Development, the workshop "Sustainable development of seaports and airports" took place in Ho Chi Minh City.

Cooperation between Vietnam and the Netherlands, with the sharing of experience in green seaports, smart airports and sustainable initiatives, will help the city reach international stature.

Many opportunities for cooperation in seaport development

On November 12, within the framework of the visit of the Minister of Foreign Trade and Development of the Netherlands, the workshop "Sustainable development of seaports and airports" took place in Ho Chi Minh City. This is an important event not only in the relationship between the two countries but also in the strategy for developing seaport and airport infrastructure in Ho Chi Minh City in the future. With the participation of international experts and representatives of Dutch enterprises, this workshop clarified the potential for cooperation in developing smart, green and sustainable seaports for Ho Chi Minh City.

The Netherlands, with more than 30 years of experience in developing green seaports, can support Ho Chi Minh City's development.

Ho Chi Minh City is currently in the process of expanding its seaport and aviation infrastructure, with the goal of not only meeting domestic demand but also becoming an international transit center of regional and world stature. In particular, with a system of 98 ports after merging with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces, Ho Chi Minh City has increased its cargo output to more than 330 million tons per year. However, to continue sustainable development, the application of green and smart technologies to port operations is an urgent issue.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Mr. Bui Xuan Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, emphasized: "Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular are entering a period of expanding seaport and aviation infrastructure with unprecedented scale and speed. Ho Chi Minh City is making efforts to develop smart and green seaports, aiming to become one of the largest seaport centers in the region." He also said that the city is eager to cooperate with the Netherlands in sharing experiences in planning, operation and technology transfer to develop seaports that meet international standards in terms of environment and operational efficiency.

The Netherlands, with more than 30 years of experience in developing green ports, can support Ho Chi Minh City in transforming its existing seaports into transport hubs that are not only efficient but also environmentally friendly. The Port of Rotterdam, one of the largest ports in Europe, is a model in applying green solutions, such as using renewable energy from wind and solar, reducing emissions, and effectively managing waste. Learning and applying these models will help Ho Chi Minh City build a smart seaport that meets international standards in terms of environment and technology.

One of the innovations that the Netherlands can share is electric ship and barge technology, which helps reduce pollution and save energy. According to a representative of the Damen Group, electric ships are now ready to operate in major ports around the world , including the ability to self-produce energy and reuse energy at the port. With this support, Ho Chi Minh City can develop green seaports, limit negative impacts on the environment, and at the same time increase operational capacity to meet international trade needs.

In addition, the creation of green transport corridors connecting major ports such as Cai Mep with Rotterdam is also an effective cooperation opportunity. This not only helps to optimize the transport of goods but also creates an effective logistics system linking international ports. A representative of the Port of Rotterdam shared: "To develop a green transport belt, the parties need to share data and apply unified standards. Therefore, cooperation between seaports will help Vietnam and the Netherlands work together towards this goal, thereby developing green corridors such as Cai Mep - Rotterdam."

Developing smart airports and aviation connectivity

Not only in the field of seaports, cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City and the Netherlands in the field of aviation also opens up great opportunities. Ho Chi Minh City is currently aiming to become the leading aviation - logistics hub in Southeast Asia. Key airports such as Tan Son Nhat, Con Dao and Vung Tau, together with the upcoming Long Thanh International Airport, will create a complete air-water-land connection network, helping Ho Chi Minh City achieve this goal.

"Aviation and maritime transport are potential sectors in Vietnam, bringing many opportunities, but also many challenges. The Netherlands is pleased to share with Vietnam its experience in developing smart and sustainable airports," said Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Aukje de Vries at the workshop. The Minister also pointed out that applying solutions such as "airport city" from Amsterdam Schiphol will help Ho Chi Minh City modernize and optimize its airports, while improving connectivity and enhancing operational efficiency.

Ho Chi Minh City can cooperate with the Netherlands in building sustainable solutions, such as applying renewable energy and reducing emissions.

The Netherlands, with its outstanding experience in developing smart airports, can provide Ho Chi Minh City with modern design and operation solutions. The "airport city" model of Amsterdam Schiphol is a typical example. The Netherlands has successfully developed an airport system combined with urban areas, which is not only a place for goods trading but also a connecting center between commercial, transport and community services. Applying this model at Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh will help Ho Chi Minh City optimize existing infrastructure and build a modern, smart airport to meet the increasing demand for air transport.

For airport infrastructure development, Ho Chi Minh City can cooperate with the Netherlands in building sustainable solutions, such as applying renewable energy, minimizing carbon emissions and optimizing wastewater treatment processes. Long Thanh Airport, with a design based on green and smart criteria, will be a pioneer model, applying technologies such as solar power systems and modern water treatment systems, towards the goal of becoming a zero-emission airport in the future.

Vietnam-Netherlands cooperation in the field of seaport and aviation development not only opens up great opportunities for Ho Chi Minh City to improve operational efficiency, but also promotes the sustainable development of the city. The Netherlands, with its extensive experience in building and operating smart seaports and airports, can play an important role in helping Ho Chi Minh City realize its vision of becoming a leading regional trade and logistics center. With strong commitments from both countries, this cooperation will help Ho Chi Minh City overcome challenges in infrastructure, digital transformation and sustainable development, expanding cooperation opportunities in the future.
