Global electric vehicle sales hit 1.9 million units in October

Global sales of all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles rose 23% in October 2025 to 1.9 million units, driven by strong demand in major markets, market research firm Rho Motion said on November 12.

Sales in China rose to around 1.3 million vehicles, in Europe they rose 36% to 372,786 vehicles, while in North America they fell 41% to 100,370 vehicles. Sales in the rest of the world rose 37% to 141,368 vehicles.

Europe led the regional sales growth, with strong demand in Germany, France and the UK, while overall sales eased after a peak month and the European Union approved more battery projects. Overall growth in Europe so far this year remains relatively strong and sales are expected to pick up further later in the year, said Charles Lester, head of data at Rho Motion.

Meanwhile, China is the world’s largest car market and accounts for more than half of global sales, including battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. The price gap between electric vehicles and internal combustion engine vehicles in China is less than in Europe or North America, Lester said. The Chinese market is expected to grow strongly in November and December, when the country switches from a full exemption from sales tax to a 50% exemption for new energy electric vehicles.

Electric vehicle sales in North America fell sharply after hitting a record high in February, due to reduced demand related to the expiration of a $7,500 tax credit, Mr. Lester added. Battery-powered electric vehicles remain much more expensive than comparable internal combustion models in the U.S., contributing to the sharp decline in sales in October 2025 among major automakers.
