With more than two months to go until the main season of longan harvest, some early-ripening longan orchards in many localities in the province have begun to be harvested. Thanks to the effective application of intensive farming techniques, many farmers have not only been able to take the initiative in harvesting time but also achieved economic value many times higher than that of the main season.
For more than a month now, Tan Hung Fruit and Agricultural Products Processing Cooperative (Hung Yen city) has had early longan for sale, with prices ranging from 50,000 - 70,000 VND/kg depending on the type. The product is mainly consumed in provinces and cities such as: Hanoi , Quang Ninh, Hai Phong...
Mr. Hoang Van Muoi, Director of Tan Hung Fruit and Agricultural Products Processing Cooperative, said: Currently, the cooperative maintains the cultivation of more than 26.5 hectares of longan of all kinds. In recent years, in order to improve economic efficiency from longan fruit and at the same time reduce the pressure on consumption of fresh longan fruit in the main season, members of the cooperative have always proactively applied scientific and technical measures in production to adjust longan flowering and fruiting into 3 crops: early tea, medium tea, late tea. This year, early ripening longan tea accounts for about 10% of the total cultivated area. Thanks to adjusting the care regime to suit the weather, early ripening longan fruit has a beautiful appearance, fragrant and sweet quality. Currently, early ripening longan is sold as gifts, with a selling price twice as high as the main season, supply cannot meet demand.
In Khoai Chau district, one of the leading households in handling longan fruiting early is Mr. Hoang Quang Tuan in village 1, Chi Minh commune. With a farm area of over 10 hectares, Mr. Tuan grows about 400 longan trees, mainly high-quality varieties such as: T1, T2, T6, super sweet and early ripening longan varieties. More than 10 years ago, he boldly experimented with new farming methods to control the flowering time of longan trees. In the early years, he repeatedly failed due to not mastering the techniques, but thanks to his perseverance in learning, researching and drawing experience from reality, he has now mastered the technical process of handling longan fruiting early.
According to Mr. Tuan, the process of making longan trees flower early requires the trees to be healthy and well cared for from the beginning of the season. At the right time, he watered the biological products under the tree, after about 10 days, he ringed the branches and stopped watering. After 25 to 27 days, the tree began to flower. He usually applies this technique from the third to the eighth lunar month, so that he can harvest the fruit from the second to the fourth lunar month of the following year. This year, his family's early-ripening longan garden is estimated to yield 4 to 4.5 tons. With an average selling price of 50,000 VND/kg, 2 to 3 times higher than the price of longan in the main season, he is expected to earn about 200 million VND from early-ripening longan.
According to data from the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, the province currently has about 4,900 hectares of longan, of which the area of early-ripening longan accounts for about 7%, mainly concentrated in the districts of Khoai Chau, An Thi, Phu Cu, Tien Lu, Kim Dong and Hung Yen city. These are areas suitable for longan trees, and people are experienced and proactive in applying advanced techniques to production.
According to the assessment of the professional sector, the treatment of longan to flower and bear fruit early not only helps people to take the initiative in the crop calendar, reduce the pressure of consumption during the main season but also increases the economic value thanks to high selling prices. To improve the economic efficiency of early ripening longan, the provincial agricultural sector encourages cooperatives, cooperative groups and gardeners to join in the production and consumption of longan, at the same time, applying technical measures for cultivation of some high-quality longan varieties to harvest early and spread out the crop.
Not only bringing high profits to growers, Hung Yen's early ripening longan is also highly appreciated by the market for its quality. Ms. Tran Thi Trang, a trader specializing in purchasing agricultural products from Hai Phong city, said: Hung Yen's early ripening longan has a rich, sweet taste, delicious, and is favored by consumers. Therefore, consumption is favorable, traders like us always prioritize early purchase.
In fact, being proactive in the flowering and harvesting time has opened up an effective direction for longan growers in Hung Yen. Not only avoiding the pressure of “good harvest, low price”, early ripening longan also contributes to increasing product value, improving income and life for farmers.
