The Hanoi Departmentof Education and Training has just issued Guidelines for admission to kindergartens, grades 1 and 6 for the 2023-2024 school year. This school year, the areas for admission to grades 1 and 6 will be implemented according to the routes prescribed by the People's Committees of districts, towns and cities.
Accordingly, the area for enrolling students into grades 1 and 6 for the 2023-2024 school year is carried out according to the enrollment route, as prescribed by the People's Committee of the district, town, or city for schools in the area. The age for admission to grade 1 is 6 years old (born in 2017). Disabled children, children in especially difficult circumstances, and children returning from abroad can enter grade 1 at the age of 7 to 9. Schools are not allowed to admit underage children to grade 1.
The target for admission to grade 6 is students who have completed primary school. The age for admission to grade 6 in the 2023-2024 school year is 11 years old (born in 2012). For students who are allowed to skip a grade or who are admitted to primary school at a higher age than the prescribed age for primary school, the age for admission to grade 6 will be reduced or increased based on the age of the year of completion of primary school. Ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students in particularly difficult circumstances, and students returning from abroad can enter the school level at an age 3 years older than the prescribed age.
In the 2023-2024 school year, schools in the city will still apply online and direct enrollment to enroll 5-year-old children in kindergarten, enroll first graders in primary school, and enroll sixth graders in secondary school.
Online enrollment period is from July 1. In particular, enrollment for grade 1 is from July 1 to July 3; enrollment for 5-year-old children is from July 4 to July 6; enrollment for grade 6 is from July 7 to July 9.
Direct enrollment period is from July 13 to July 18. According to preliminary statistics from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, in the 2023-2024 school year, the number of students of enrollment age in the first grades increased sharply compared to the 2022-2023 school year. Notably, the number of students of enrollment age in grade 6 increased by nearly 39,000.
