According to a VNA correspondent in Jakarta, three member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that share sovereignty over Kalimantan Island (also known as Borneo), namely Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, have agreed to establish the Borneo Economic Community (BEC) to stimulate Green Economy development not only on the island but also promote Green Economy in ASEAN.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 2nd Borneo Business Roundtable on September 6, Chairman of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) Arsjad Rasjid said that representatives of the three ASEAN countries of Indonesia , Malaysia and Brunei have officially approved the cooperation to establish the Borneo Economic Community (BEC).
Mr. Arsjad stressed that the countries agreed to establish a joint cooperation task force including BEC representatives to enhance cooperation in shaping Kalimantan as a dynamic island.

This joint task force also aims to make Kalimantan a Green Economy hub in ASEAN , based on sustainable development goals to achieve community welfare and environmental protection.
Meanwhile, Brunei ASEAN-BAC Chair Haslina Taib explained that BEC aims to act as a comprehensive and sustainable business association for companies in Kalimantan and professionals in emerging sectors.
Ms. Taib assured that BEC engages all businesses; including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), social enterprises and highly skilled individuals. BEC is committed to promoting regional sustainability in ASEAN, addressing business challenges in Kalimantan and enhancing cooperation both within and outside Kalimantan.
The three ASEAN countries held the second Borneo Business Roundtable in Jakarta after the first meeting was successfully held in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei last April./.
