IOM ready to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam

On November 14, Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and other international organizations in Geneva, had a working meeting with Ms. Amy Pope, new Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

At the meeting, Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai congratulated Ms. Amy Pope on assuming the important position of IOM Director General, the first female Director General of IOM from October 1, 2023.

Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai also reaffirmed Vietnam’s support and commitment to promoting cooperation with IOM in implementing the Global Compact on Migration (GCM); Vietnamese ministries, departments and sectors always prioritize, care and coordinate to ensure an interdisciplinary approach in addressing migration challenges.

Some areas of cooperation include protecting the rights of migrant workers, ensuring health and access to healthcare for migrants, and improving people’s ability to adapt and respond to climate change. In addition, Vietnam also actively participates in international cooperation mechanisms on migration within the framework of ASEAN, ASEM, and APEC.

The IOM Director General said that enhancing the ability to respond and withstand climate change and natural disasters for migrants is a top priority for IOM's activities in the coming time. She also recognized that IOM and Vietnam have a lot of potential to enhance cooperation in international mechanisms, especially in the fields of labor migration, linking the resolution of migration challenges with the implementation of development goals, and enhancing the ability to respond to climate change.

From October 1, 2023, Ms. Amy Pope (US nationality) officially took office, becoming the first female Director General of IOM after being elected by member countries in the June 2023 election.

Amy Pope’s priorities as IOM Director General include: (i) strengthening support for migrants and vulnerable groups through on-the-ground measures; (ii) enhancing the engagement and engagement of member states and the private sector in addressing migration-related challenges, promoting country-specific policies; (iii) leveraging IOM’s database system; (iv) prioritizing climate change-related migration challenges in IOM’s agenda; (v) continuing to reform IOM’s budget program.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), headquartered in Geneva (Switzerland), is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration, founded in 1951 and is the United Nations agency on migration (since 2016).

With 175 member states, 8 observer states, and offices in more than 100 countries, IOM works to promote safe, humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, through the provision of assistance and advice to governments and migrants.
