Israel airstrikes two schools and a hospital complex

Israel also carried out airstrikes on a tent encampment in central Gaza earlier in the day. Gaza health officials said a total of 44 Palestinians were killed on Sunday, a day after a round of talks in Cairo ended ineffectively.

Footage from Palestinian media outlets showed bodies strewn across a courtyard of two destroyed schools as locals continued to load the injured, including many children, into ambulances for transport to two nearby hospitals.

Dozens of people were also injured at Hassan Salama and Al-Nasser schools, where many displaced Palestinian families live, the Gaza Civil Emergency Department said.

The Israeli military said it had targeted Hamas-linked militia cells inside the school and had taken steps to minimise the risk to civilians.

Israel claims that the militant group Hamas regularly sets up bases inside civilian facilities, using Gaza residents as human shields. Hamas denies the accusation.

Health authorities also said that early the same morning, Israel launched a strike on the Al-Aqsa hospital complex, causing a fire and injuring at least 18 people and killing at least 5.

The Israeli military confirmed that it had targeted a militia group operating there and that there had been a secondary explosion, a sign that weapons had been hidden in the area.

The hospital complex is located in Deir Al-Balah, a densely populated area where thousands of evacuees from other areas are being housed.

Elsewhere in Deir Al-Balah, three Palestinians were killed when Israeli airstrikes hit a house. Other airstrikes killed eight people in a house in the Jabalia camp, north of Gaza City, and three people in a car.

Residents of the southeastern city of Khan Younis, southern Gaza and northern Rafah where fighting has raged for the past month have reported receiving evacuation orders from the Israeli military.

On X, an Israeli military spokesman posted an evacuation order, asking residents in several districts to move to humanitarian areas, saying that the country's forces would soon use force against militia groups attacking from this area.

In Israel, sirens were sounded in Ashdod and the Israeli military said five rockets were launched from southern Gaza. There were no reports of casualties. Hamas said the rockets were launched in response to Israel's "massacre of civilians".

Israel prepares for escalation

Israel is bracing for a serious escalation following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last Wednesday, a day after Israel carried out an airstrike on Fuad Shukr, the top military commander of Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a special security forum late Sunday, following threats of retaliation from Iran and Hezbollah, an Israeli defense ministry official said.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said he was considering a number of plans "to ensure that Iran and its proxies pay a price in the event of an attack on Israel."

"Our defense readiness is very high – whether on land or in the air, and we are ready for any counter-action or attack. If they dare to attack us, they will pay a heavy price."

Hamas and Iran have both accused Israel of carrying out Haniyeh's assassination and have vowed to respond. Israel has neither admitted nor denied responsibility for the assassination.

Like Hamas, Hezbollah is also backed by Iran and has pledged to respond to the assassination of Fuad Shukr.
