The difficulties at Oakmont, the venue for the 2025 US Open , were predicted but still surprised fans and discouraged many of the world's top golfers.

One of the biggest disappointments in the third round of the 125th US Open was Jon Rahm, the former world No. 1 and now a rising star at LIV Golf – a tournament in Saudi Arabia.

Before the 2025 US Open began, a reporter asked Rahm about the special achievement he holds – finishing in the top 10 in all 21 LIV Golf events.

“But I don’t take it too seriously,” Rahm replied, surprising everyone. “It’s much easier to finish in the top 10 in a tournament with only 54 golfers than in a tournament with 150.”

Yes, it's obvious, but no one has said it before. For the first time, Rahm is being candid, even though LIV Golf has made him half a billion dollars.

The reality at Oakmont showed how difficult it is to get into the top 10. Rahm had two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey. This result brought him to the end of the three-round competition with a score of +7.

If the US Open is known as the toughest major of the four Grand Slams, then Oakmont is the ultimate nightmare.

“This course is frustrating,” Rahm said Friday after missing a series of birdie chances. It’s Oakmont, where the rough often swallows the ball, and the greens are rock-hard.

Rahm has almost no chance. He is far behind leader Sam Burn – at -4. Next are Adam Scott and JJ Spaun (-3), Viktor Hovland (-1). Only 4 of them are in the negative.

Rory McIlroy was another disappointment, after being lucky enough to make the cut.

McIlroy shot 74 on day three – with two birdies and six bogeys. The Masters champion is having one of his worst US Opens ever.

“Overall it was pretty bad,” McIlroy admitted. He was a little discouraged: “There were times when I wondered if I really wanted to be here for the two-day weekend.”

Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler shot a 70 for the first time in this year's tournament. The result helped him keep his score at +4, still hoping for the championship title.

Neither Rahm, McIlroy nor world number one Scheffler were at their best. The main character of the third major of the year was Oakmont.
