Jordan ready for ‘any eventuality’ as conflict intensifies in Gaza

However, Prime Minister Bisher al Khasawneh did not specify what decisions Jordan would make.

The statement comes just days after Jordan recalled its ambassador from Israel in protest at Israel's offensive on Gaza in response to a Hamas attack on October 7.

This past week, Jordan also announced that Israel's ambassador (who left Amman shortly after Hamas launched the October 7 attack) would not be allowed to return, declaring him persona non grata.

Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh told state media: "All options are on the table for Jordan as we deal with the Israeli operation in Gaza and its aftermath."

Mr Khasawneh said that Israel's siege of Gaza was not an act of self-defense as Israel claims. "Israel's brutal attack does not distinguish between civilian and military targets and is expanding its attack to safe areas and ambulances."

Israel has denied deliberately targeting civilians in densely populated areas, saying Hamas is using civilians as human shields, digging tunnels under hospitals and using ambulances to transport soldiers.

"Relations with Jordan are of strategic importance to both countries and we regret the insulting statements from the Jordanian leadership," the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Several diplomats with knowledge of Jordan's internal affairs said the country is reconsidering its economic, security and political ties with Israel and could freeze or cancel parts of the peace treaty it signed if the Gaza conflict worsens.

The Israel-Hamas war has stoked long-standing fears in Jordan, which is home to a large number of Palestinian refugees and their descendants, that Israel could deport Palestinians en masse from the West Bank, where Israeli attacks on Palestinian residents have increased since Hamas launched an offensive on October 7.

King Abdullah voiced these concerns during talks with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels, warning of the potential for violence to spread to the predominantly Arab West Bank and East Jerusalem if attacks by Jewish settlers on Palestinian civilians spiral out of control.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said any move to deport Palestinians to Jordan, which borders the West Bank, would be a "red line" that would be tantamount to a declaration of war.

“We will confront any attempt to expel Palestinians in an attempt to change Israel’s geography and demographics,” Safadi added.

The Jordanian army has reinforced positions along its border, security sources said.

Diplomats said Jordan has made these concerns a focus of talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken since the Gaza war began and will likely be raised again in an upcoming meeting with CIA Director William Burns during his visit to Jordan.
