A "stormy" but memorable trip

Having planned a trip to Hue for a long time, Luu Thoan and her group of friends were finally able to make it happen at the end of October. The three girls booked flights from Hanoi to Hue, planning to explore the ancient capital city for 3 days from October 26 to October 28.

They had planned the trip in great detail with the desire to visit many famous tourist attractions and enjoy all the specialties of Hue. However, the trip became a memorable memory for a lifetime when the group of tourists arrived at the time when Hue suffered from historic floods.

From the very beginning of the trip, the journey did not go as expected. The group boarded the plane, departing from Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi at 10am on October 26. Due to bad weather, the plane could not land at Phu Bai International Airport (Hue). Finally, the pilot was forced to land at Da Nang International Airport.

The airline then arranged a bus to take passengers from Da Nang to Hue. At around 5 p.m. the same day, the group of guests arrived at the homestay in Hue city, much later than expected.

Despite being tired from the long journey, the group of tourists still maintained their eagerness to explore Hue soon. However, the next morning (October 27), heavy rain continued all day, causing the city to be submerged in water. Although the water was up to their waists, the group of tourists still determined to wear raincoats and wade through the water to visit the Imperial Citadel.

When they reached the Imperial Citadel gate, they could not go further inside because the water was too deep. The three girls only had time to stand outside and take a few photos to "commemorate the flood" before wading back home.

On the way home, the group received a call from the hotel owner informing them that the hotel had lost power. At this time, their phones were running low on battery, so they had to stop by a large coffee shop near the center to rest and charge their phones.

We had prepared a list of delicious dishes to enjoy in Hue, but at that time all the shops were closed, Thoan and her friend had to go to the grocery store to buy instant noodles and drinks to eat in the room.

Seeing the floodwaters rising, the Hanoi group was worried. They had a return flight at 9pm on October 28. However, that same morning, the group decided to find a way to get to the airport early because if they stayed longer, the situation might become more difficult to travel.

From the third floor of the homestay, Thoan saw a boat carrying people across the flooded area. She quickly called out to the boat driver, asking to join. The boat driver agreed, and the group quickly packed their suitcases. Here, they were taken to a bridge with shallower water around them.

While struggling to find a taxi to get to the airport, the group of tourists were directed by the boat driver to a local farmer’s tractor. Through asking, Thoan learned that the tractor driver was on his way to the area near the airport, so she asked if she could get a ride.

At that time, tractors were the only means of transport that could get through many heavily flooded roads while other vehicles such as taxis were "helpless".

"At this time, we were about 15km from the airport. Even though we had a flight at 9pm, we were still worried about being late so we had to leave early. I was also confused because I couldn't call any taxi company. Luckily, a tractor driver came to our rescue in time," Thoan said.

The Hanoi tourist recalled that at that time everything was difficult, the luggage was soaked. However, the group of tourists received enthusiastic support from the surrounding people. During the journey, passing through many deep flooded sections, the tractor still steadfastly made it through thanks to the high chassis. They were escorted by the driver to the door of the station.

Thoan said that when the time came to call for a car, the group decided that even if it cost millions to travel, they would accept it. However, when they asked the tractor driver, he refused to take the money and said he only wanted to help the group.

"We were so engrossed in our conversation that we didn't have time to ask the driver's name. He definitely didn't want to take the money, but I managed to put some money in his pocket as a thank you," the Hanoi girl recounted.

Finally, the group arrived at the airport quite early and waited there until 9pm to board the plane. They landed at Noi Bai airport to return home safely late at night.

Although we could not visit many famous places and experience special dishes as planned, the memorable memories and enthusiastic help of Hue people made the trip an unforgettable one.

Thoan said that on the way, she still received phone calls from the hotel owner asking how things were going and whether she had arrived home safely. This made her feel warm even though Hue was still cold and rainy.

"Hue people are so warm and enthusiastic, which makes us very grateful. We will definitely return to Hue one day to fully explore this place," said the Hanoi visitor.

Mr. Phan Thien Dinh, Chairman of Hue City People's Committee, said that during the period of October 25-28, there was very heavy rain in the city.

Rainfall measured in 24 hours in mountainous areas commonly ranges from 800mm to 1,000mm.

Authorities recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall in 24 hours at Khe Tre reaching nearly 1,205mm, Bach Ma nearly 1,740mm (October 27), exceeding the historical level ever recorded in Vietnam of nearly 1,086mm.
