( Bqp.vn ) - On July 15, the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department (VPA) coordinated with the US Office of Defense Cooperation in Hanoi to organize the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 United Nations Military Observer Instructor Training Course.
Major General Pham Manh Thang delivered the opening speech at the training course.
Speaking at the opening of the training course, Major General Pham Manh Thang, Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, highly appreciated the effective coordination between the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI), the US Office of Defense Cooperation in Hanoi and the Training Center, Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations to organize this training course.

Major General Pham Manh Thang emphasized that the training course supported by GPOI aims to train domestic lecturers and GPOI partner countries on the content of United Nations Military Observers in peacekeeping activities; at the same time, provide basic knowledge and skills for officers who will be sent to United Nations missions to assume the position of Military Observers in particular and for individuals participating in the United Nations peacekeeping field in general.

According to Head of the GPOI Lecturer Bengt Folkesson, throughout the history of the formation of the UN peacekeeping force, the Military Observer Force has been the “eyes and ears” of the UN Security Council. Military Observers are present in field missions to carry out their work through monitoring, reporting, investigating, negotiating, approaching local residents, liaising, supporting humanitarian forces, UN police and other protection forces, etc.
GPOI Instructor Group Leader Folkesson added that the GPOI curriculum is regularly updated to meet the ever-evolving challenges of UN peacekeeping missions. The UN Military Observer Instructor Training Course in Vietnam is an important opportunity for instructors and trainees, contributing to the renewal of the commitment of countries and organizations to participate in UN peacekeeping operations better and more effectively.

On behalf of the trainees participating in the training course, Captain Do Huyen Trang, an officer of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department, shared that the tasks of Military Observers such as: Negotiation, information gathering, etc. are tasks that not only require foreign languages, communication skills but also knowledge and experience. Therefore, this training course will be a great opportunity for trainees to learn more from experts and colleagues to become future instructors, contributing to the success in performing the tasks of a Military Observer.

According to the plan, from July 15 to August 2, trainees from Indonesia, Mongolia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to help improve teaching related to the content of Military Observers as well as the ability to perform field missions.
