
According to information from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry has just sent a document to the People's Committee of Da Nang city regarding the discovery of ancient ship relics in the coastal area of Hoi An Tay ward.
Previously, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism received Report No. 482/BC-SVHTTDL dated November 10, 2025 of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Da Nang on the above issue. After consideration, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requested the People's Committee of Da Nang City to promptly plan, direct and mobilize forces in the area to protect the safety, security and order of the area where the ancient ship was discovered; promptly prevent and handle all activities that endanger the safety of the ancient ship and relics and antiquities. At the same time, organize propaganda for the people about the protection of cultural heritage in the ancient ship area in compliance with the provisions of the Law on Cultural Heritage 2024.
In addition, direct the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to urgently coordinate with agencies and organizations with the function of archaeological exploration and excavation to establish underwater archaeological excavation projects according to the provisions of Clause 2, Article 31 of Decree No. 215/2025/ND-CP dated August 4, 2025 of the Government stipulating measures to manage, protect and promote the values of world cultural and natural heritage, underwater cultural heritage, intangible cultural heritage in the UNESCO Lists and the National List of intangible cultural heritage and policies for artisans and subjects of intangible cultural heritage; provisions of law on investment, public investment and other relevant provisions of law to propose to the People's Committee of Da Nang city for approval.
In addition, the People's Committee of Da Nang City will soon chair a conference to consult with a number of experts, scientists and relevant agencies to conduct a survey of the current status and propose a plan to protect the area where the ancient ship was discovered before conducting preliminary appraisal and assessment of the artifacts and implementing measures to manage, protect and promote their value according to the provisions of the law on cultural heritage.
Previously, around the beginning of November, in the area of Hoi An Tay ward, Da Nang city, large waves eroded the coastline, and low tide in the morning, revealing the hull of an ancient ship. The ship was estimated to be around the 14th-16th century, and is considered one of the few relatively intact ancient ships discovered in Vietnam. The ship's structure has characteristics that are a cross between Southeast Asian and East Asian shipbuilding styles.
The wreck of this ancient ship was discovered in December 2023 at Tan Thanh beach, Hoi An city (old), initially only a few pieces of wood were exposed on the sand. The government coordinated with specialized agencies to take samples to determine the age using the carbon isotope method. By January 2024, high tides and silting sand caused the ship to be buried again.
