Eucalyptus trees have the advantage of growing quickly, being exploited in just 5-6 years, with high prices and stable output. Therefore, in recent years, people in the province have focused on economic development from eucalyptus trees. However, recently, many eucalyptus growing areas have experienced leaf burn and dry branches, leading to poor tree growth or tree death.

Mr. Duong Van Linh, Deputy Director of the Bac Son District Agricultural Service Center, said: In September 2024, through investigation and monitoring of the growth and development of eucalyptus trees, the unit discovered that the eucalyptus trees had brown and black spots on the leaves, the branches gradually dried up from the lower branches and leaves to the top, and the roots of the eucalyptus trees were rotten and black. The total area of eucalyptus trees with the phenomenon was about 85.6 hectares in the communes of Nhat Tien, Chien Thang, Tan Tri, and Tan Thanh. Given this reality, we reported to the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection to inspect and determine the cause. At the same time, the unit sent specialized staff directly to the communes to propagate and instruct households on disease prevention measures. Currently, the infected areas are being actively prevented by people by spraying pesticides; cutting off infected branches and leaves from the forest; clearing the forest...

Instructions on measures to prevent leaf burn and dry branch disease from the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection:

To effectively prevent the disease, people need to take care of eucalyptus trees properly and regularly check the forest to detect diseases early; when detecting branches and leaves that are seriously infected, people need to cut them off and take them out of the forest. Use some active ingredients that have an effect on fungi that harm plants such as: Metalaxyl, Mancozeb, Fosetyl-aluminium, Azoxystrobin... to prevent the disease. When using pesticides, it is necessary to follow the 4 correct rules, avoid affecting the living environment in the spraying area, avoid spraying on rainy days as this will affect the quality of prevention.

Not only in Bac Son district, eucalyptus growers in Huu Lung district also face a similar situation. Mr. Lo Van Luyen, Van Nham commune, Huu Lung district said: My family planted eucalyptus in 2017 with an area of about 1 hectare. After exploitation, the family continued to take care of the eucalyptus trees regenerated from the root shoots, however, after 2 years, the trees showed signs of curled leaves, dead leaves and withered branches, the trees grew poorly, and even died. Currently, my family has cut down, cleared and switched to planting acacia trees.

Similar to the people in the two districts above, some eucalyptus areas in other districts such as Loc Binh, Cao Loc, Chi Lang also experienced leaf burn and dry branches. According to the results of the survey of plant pests by the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, leaf burn and dry branches in eucalyptus trees began to appear from May 2024 to present with a total infected area of over 809 hectares. Of which, the lightly infected area is 1 hectare, the moderately infected area is over 660 hectares, and the heavily infected area is 147 hectares.

Upon discovery, the provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection coordinated with the district agricultural service centers to inspect and determine the cause. The results showed that the eucalyptus trees had leaf burn and dry branches caused by the fungus Cryptosporiopis eucalypti Sankaran & B.Sutton. This fungus develops and causes strong damage during months with high rainfall and high humidity in the eucalyptus forest.

Mr. Sam Ngoc Thanh, Deputy Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, said: After detecting the disease, the department has provided instructions on measures to prevent leaf blight and dry branches to the agricultural service centers of the districts. At the same time, it is recommended that the centers expand their investigation routes, proactively monitor and grasp the outbreak and development of the disease in eucalyptus forests; strengthen propaganda, guidance and recommendations for people to regularly visit the forest, proactively apply timely and effective prevention measures.

Thanks to that, up to now, the disease on eucalyptus trees has decreased, people have taken preventive measures on over 465 hectares. In the remaining areas, people are continuing to urgently prevent and control, in some areas that are heavily infected, people have proactively cut down, treated the ground cover and switched to planting other types of trees.

With solutions and the initiative of professional units and farmers, currently, infected eucalyptus areas are being thoroughly prevented from spreading widely.
