Praising Mexico for its response to the tariff decree, the US gives a valuable "gift"

On February 3, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the US administration has agreed to suspend comprehensive tariffs on the country for one month while the two sides negotiate to reach an agreement.

The Washington Post quoted Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum as saying that in a phone call with his US counterpart Donald Trump, Mexico agreed to strengthen border security with 10,000 national guard troops to try to stop the flow of drugs, especially fentanyl precursors, across the border into the US.

Meanwhile, Washington has agreed to make efforts to prevent arms smuggling to neighboring countries.

President Sheinbaum made the statement two days after Mr. Trump announced a 25% tariff on goods imported from Mexico and Canada, arguing that the two countries had failed to stop the illegal flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants across the border into the United States.

The White House has accused drug cartels of having an “unacceptable alliance” with the Mexican government. The US is set to impose a 25% tariff on the two neighboring countries starting February 4.

Prior to Sheinbaum's announcement, Kevin Hasset, director of the White House National Economic Council, praised Mexico on CNBC , saying that its neighbor was "very serious about implementing what President Trump said," while Canada "seemed to have misunderstood the clear language in the order."

Canada has reacted strongly to the US tariff plan, announcing that it will impose 25% tariffs on US goods worth up to CAD 155 billion ($106.5 billion) in response.

As each other’s largest trading partners, Mexico is particularly dependent on cross-border trade, with more than 80% of its exports going to the U.S. If the tariffs drag on for months, economists say, Mexico will almost certainly suffer a recession.
