When young bamboo shoots promote drowning prevention

The festival of young propaganda teams on drowning prevention for children in the 2024-2025 school year organized by the Provincial Youth Union, the Provincial Youth Union Council, and the Department of Education and Training of Phu Yen has just taken place in an exciting manner. The festival is not only a healthy and useful playground for young propaganda teams to show their talents, but also brings many meaningful messages, helping children and team members improve their understanding and awareness of drowning prevention, so that they know how to protect themselves from the dangers around them.

Meaningful playground

Do not swim in the sea, lakes, rivers or streams without permission from an adult; if you do not know how to swim, do not go into the water to save people; need to be equipped with swimming skills and knowledge... are the messages sent by 9 young propaganda teams from 9 districts, towns and cities in the province to this year's Young Propaganda Teams Festival.

Participating in the festival, nearly 180 team members from 9 young propaganda teams of districts, towns and cities brought unique skits in the form of dramatization to propagate the current situation, meaning and importance of the work of preventing injuries and drowning in children today; reflecting new and creative models and solutions of the team organization in promoting children's participation in propaganda against drowning. The teams brought attractive and exciting performances, expressed in many forms such as: folk songs, chants, songs, dances...

Surpassing 8 competing teams, the Young Propaganda Team of Dong Xuan District Youth Union won first prize at this year's festival. With the skit "Joining hands to prevent child drowning", the children brought the message "Do not go to rivers and streams without an adult to avoid tragic accidents and protect yourself".

The skit is about Nam, a poor, studious, studious student who bravely jumped into the rushing water to save his drowning friend. After bringing his friend to shore, Nam died due to exhaustion, leaving his family and friends with great pain and loss. The skit was performed vividly and engagingly by students of Xuan Son Nam Primary and Secondary School.

Mr. Ho Van Liem, teacher in charge of the Youth Union of Xuan Son Nam Primary and Secondary School, said: The above skit recreates a real event in reality, performed by the students in a close and attractive way. In addition to staging dramatized skits to promote drowning prevention, the school also integrates propaganda into flag salutes and class activities; establishes Zalo and Facebook groups, regularly posts measures to prevent drowning, and calls on parents to remind their children.

The school also invited swimming coaches and medical experts to train swimming skills and first aid in drowning accidents. Notably, this school year, the school's students created a drowning prevention and warning system located in river systems, helping to detect cases of potential drowning, winning first prize at the district level and third prize at the provincial level in the Science and Technology Innovation Competition for students.

Improve propaganda effectiveness

As one of the active contestants at this year's Young Propaganda Teams Festival, Do Ngoc Phuong Thuy, class 8A1, Nguyen Huu Tho Secondary School (Son Hoa District) said: The young propaganda team of my district participating in this festival has 20 members, practicing the skit for the competition for 15 days. We are very happy that the skit won second prize at the festival.

This achievement helps me and my friends in the school's young propaganda team in particular, and Son Hoa district in general, to be more confident in giving opinions on children's issues, promoting children's participation rights through dramatization; diversifying propaganda activities to raise awareness and knowledge of the 2016 Law on Children among children and the community.

The festival of young propaganda teams on drowning prevention is a playground for young propaganda teams in the provincial teams to share experiences and creative ways in propaganda on drowning prevention. From there, the children continue to develop their talents, becoming active young propagandists at school, family and society in improving the effectiveness of propaganda work on drowning prevention among children and the community.

According to Mr. Vo Duy Kha, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, Chairman of the Provincial Youth Union Council, drowning accidents are one of the dangers that threaten the health and lives of children, especially in the summer, when they have a long break from school. Recently, drowning incidents of students have occurred continuously in many provinces and cities across the country, including Phu Yen province.

To raise awareness among students and children, in addition to organizing the Young Pioneers' Propaganda Festival on drowning prevention, the Provincial Youth Union and the Provincial Pioneer Council also gave life jackets to students; organized propaganda and training on knowledge and skills to proactively prevent injuries, drowning, first aid for drowning accidents and safe swimming; held the Golden Bell contest to learn about drowning prevention; organized safe swimming classes for children and adolescents.

“In particular, the Provincial Youth Union and the Provincial Youth Union Council have established a Communication Team for Drowning Prevention in Phu Yen Province with 30 volunteers participating in communication activities on drowning prevention in children in the province to contribute to raising public awareness of the importance of protecting children from drowning,” Mr. Kha added.
