When young people return to their hometown to do farming, it will reduce pressure on the elderly and increase economic value. |
Attractive agricultural models with real income
In reality, young people will not choose to stay in the fields if they have to continue living a life of “working hard” like previous generations. Traditional agriculture with its low income, high risks, dependence on weather and unstable markets is no longer attractive enough for them.
However, that does not mean that young people will completely turn their backs on agriculture. When agriculture becomes a profession with real business potential, is well-organized, applies high technology, has a clear market and stable income, they will be the pioneers.
Mr. Nguyen Van Bach, born in 1991, Trai Moi hamlet, Phu Lac commune, with a model of growing melons; Do The Long, born in 1995, Lung 1 hamlet, Phu Lac commune (Dai Tu), with a model of producing specialty tea, or Mr. Nguyen Van Tham, born in 1985, Na Ban hamlet, Phuc Luong commune (Dai Tu), with a model of raising organic pigs... are typical young people who, after "wandering" in society, have returned to get rich on their homeland. They all have a revenue of over 1 billion VND/year. Mr. Do The Long shared: "In the past, many young people thought that tea production was hard work, but now after finishing university, some people come back to work with us because the income is good and they are proactive in life."
Agricultural production according to the linked chain will contribute to stabilizing the product consumption market. |
Or the model of combining ecological agriculture with experiential tourism of Ms. Bui Thi Mai, born in 1990, in Hoang Nong commune (Dai Tu). Mai built May Suon Dong Homestay to attract tourists to visit and relax, contributing to promoting the beautiful image of her hometown Dai Tu; at the same time, introducing to tourists the process of safe tea production and enjoying local cuisine that is also safely prepared.
Chain linkage - a vital factor for young people to feel secure in farming
One of the biggest barriers that makes young people hesitate to return to farming is the worry of "not knowing who to sell to", or falling into the vicious cycle of "good harvest, low price, good price, bad harvest". Many young people have returned to their hometowns with the desire to start a business from growing clean vegetables, raising hill chickens, or producing tea... but had to give up halfway because there was no stable market, prices were forced down, or they did not have enough resources to take care of "from A to Z".
Therefore, linking the value chain, from production, processing to consumption, is the "lifebuoy" for young people to confidently stick with farming, considering agriculture as a real career, not a temporary solution.
Nhat Thuc Tea Cooperative, in Phuc Linh Commune (Dai Tu), is one of the successful cooperatives thanks to its ability to build a chain of links from planting, caring, producing, and consuming products. Tea growers no longer have to worry about "who to sell fresh tea to, at what price", because the cooperative guarantees consumption at a stable price of 20,000-30,000 VND/kg of fresh tea. More than 100 households in Phuc Linh and some neighboring communes have become "partners" of the cooperative in providing safe raw materials. The cooperative absolutely does not buy fresh tea outside the linked area. With a revenue of nearly 3 billion VND/year, Nhat Thuc Tea Cooperative is creating regular jobs for more than 10 workers with an average income of 8 million VND/person/month.
In the mountainous district of Vo Nhai, in previous years, many young households who grew bamboo shoots, custard apples, and medicinal herbs failed because they had no stable market and were dependent on traders. During the harvest season, many households had to dump tons of bamboo shoots and sell custard apples below cost because they could not find an outlet. But now that has changed, with many cooperatives taking over the purchase of their products, many agricultural households in Vo Nhai no longer worry about the outlet for their products.
The ecological agricultural tourism model of Ms. Bui Thi Mai, in Hoang Nong commune (Dai Tu) has initially achieved positive results. |
Linking the value chain in agriculture is the foundation for young people to no longer be alone in farming. When there is a clear consumer market, reputable partners, a supportive ecosystem from training, techniques to packaging, communication... farming becomes a rational and profitable choice. Thai Nguyen needs to expand effective linkage models, support cooperatives, youth cooperatives, agricultural enterprises to accompany young people so that each product of tea, grapefruit, custard apple, hill chicken... has a sustainable value chain connection.
Digital agriculture - a door for young people to develop their technological capacity
We cannot expect older farmers to run smart production models or promote tea, chicken, grapefruit on Facebook, TikTok, Shopee... This is the playground of young people. A group of young people founded a startup called Thai Nguyen Clean Agricultural Products, specializing in livestreaming to sell Vo Nhai custard apples, Bao Thai Dinh Hoa rice, Phuc Triu grapefruit... Each custard apple crop, the group sells over 500 orders/day, puts products on e-commerce platforms, and earns over 500 million/crop.
Rural areas do not lack land or opportunities, they only lack practical agricultural models with "worthy profits" for young people to stay. To retain young people, the province needs to: Prioritize investment in high-tech agricultural models, large enough in scale, with a guaranteed market; Build a clear, transparent value chain, with accompanying partners, so that young people are not alone; Encourage and support digital agricultural startups - where young people can be creative, take ownership and get rich... In addition, there needs to be preferential credit policies, land support, vocational training, and social insurance for young farmers, especially those starting up in rural areas. At the same time, it is necessary to develop youth cooperatives and youth groups to create a labor community with sustainable skills and motivation.
“No one leaves the village when the village gives them a worthy future”. Thai Nguyen countryside can completely do that if it knows how to ignite the aspiration of young people with agricultural models worth committing to.
Thai Nguyen needs a harmonious development strategy, where industry is modernized, but the countryside is still a place worth living and working. Then, young people will not have to leave the village to find opportunities, but their hometown will be their greatest opportunity. Retaining young workers is not only a solution to create jobs but also to maintain vitality, future and balance for sustainable rural development.
