A video of locals curious about the braided hair of an African female tourist in Ha Giang , Vietnam, has gone viral on TikTok.
Alana Rainer, a British African, shared about her trip to Ha Giang, Vietnam in mid-June. In the video, Rainer stands in the middle of a crowd. Local women are looking at her hair and talking nonstop. A woman standing behind Rainer gently strokes Rainer's hair.
Being the center of attention, Rainer always smiled and chatted with the people around him. The female tourist confessed, “I find it funny that they are so surprised.”
The video has so far attracted more than 2.4 million views and more than 159,000 likes, with thousands of comments from internet users around the world . "She touches your hair gently and respectfully," one comment pointed out.
"They are so genuine and really admire your looks. You are so beautiful," another person commented.
Rainer replied that was also the reason she let strange women touch her hair. "I also enjoyed them very much. It was really an amazing experience," the female tourist expressed.
"No matter where I go in Vietnam, everyone wants to hug me," another person shared under the post.
The woman gently touched the dark-skinned girl's braided hair.
Alana Rainer's hairstyle is dreadlocks. This is a typical African hairstyle that dates back to around 1600–1500 BC. This "rope" or "African braid" hairstyle involves letting the hair grow naturally without brushing or cutting, which causes the hair to dry and stick together, forming thick, rope-like strands.
Normally, touching these braided locks is taboo and disrespectful. But when faced with the lovely actions of the women in the highlands of Vietnam, Alana Rainer did not feel uncomfortable at all. On the contrary, she felt happy and very proud of her hair.
