- Lang Son is a land rich in tradition with more than 80% of students at all levels being children of ethnic minorities. Realizing the importance of preserving and promoting the cultural identity of ethnic groups, in recent times, the provincialeducation and training sector has been implementing many methods of ethnic cultural education, shifting from one-way transmission to diverse and profound experiences, arousing students' love and sense of responsibility for their homeland's cultural heritage.
In the last 5 school years, instead of dry theoretical lessons, the content of ethnic cultural education has been integrated by teachers regularly, flexibly and diversely into subjects such as Literature, History, Geography and Civic Education. For example, for Literature, teachers will integrate the teaching of folk literature works, folk songs and proverbs. Or in History and Geography lessons, students will learn about the history of formation and development of ethnic groups, explore cultural elements associated with terrain, climate... to thereby foster a sense of responsibility for the preservation of cultural heritage.
A highlight of this work is the diversification of educational forms. While in the past, students' access to national culture was still a formality, now schools have proactively established cultural and artistic clubs to create a "nursery" of talent and love of culture in generations of students. As of the 2024-2025 school year, more than 25 schools from primary to high school in the province have established and maintained clubs to teach unique traditional art forms such as then singing, tinh lute, lion dance, etc., attracting over 500 students to participate in regular activities.
Cao Loc district is one of the typical localities in the work of ethnic cultural education. According to statistics of the district's Department of Education and Training, 100% of schools in the district organize activities to bring ethnic culture into schools during holidays, opening ceremonies, and integrate into extracurricular activities... Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Cao Loc district, shared: In recent times, schools in the district have proactively researched and collected documents on history, geography, music , fine arts and typical ethnic cultural activities of Lang Son to incorporate into teaching content in a creative and effective way.
In addition, the movement to build folk cultural heritage clubs has also developed strongly, with more than 200 clubs established across the province. These clubs not only introduce but also create opportunities for students to experience practical activities such as: drawing competitions on the topic of ethnic culture (on average, there are more than 20 school-level competitions each year); making video clips introducing heritage in both Vietnamese and English (an estimated 100 quality products are created each year); designing and printing calendars, making leaflets to promote heritage (more than 1,000 products are made) and presenting heritage in English (more than 30 school-level presentations)...
In addition, schools in the province also focus on organizing extracurricular activities such as: visiting and learning about the reality in villages, hamlets, and places that preserve the typical cultural features of the locality (on average, each school year, there are over 1,000 extracurricular activities organized throughout the province) to bring students closer to their cultural roots; organizing for students to participate in folk games such as tug of war , throwing balls, jumping sacks, jumping rope, shuttlecock kicking, lion dance... thereby, not only bringing joy but also helping students understand more about the cultural values hidden in each game.
The relentless efforts of the provincial Department of Education and Training have brought about encouraging results. Students at all levels have increasingly improved their understanding of ethnic culture, forming a deep awareness of preserving the identity of their nation and homeland. At the same time, they know how to respect and exchange cultures with friends of other ethnic groups. Nong Mai Anh, a 10th grade student of C1, Trang Dinh High School, Trang Dinh District, shared: I really like the lessons that integrate content about local culture, especially the extracurricular activities to experience ethnic culture organized by the school. Here, we can exchange and learn about the traditional cultures of many different ethnic groups through artistic activities, traditional costume performances, making Chung cakes for Tet... This helps us to be much more aware of preserving and developing the cultural beauty of our nation.
Most recently, the Department of Education and Training successfully organized the Cultural Festival for Ethnic Minority Boarding Schools (PTDTBT) in the 2024-2025 school year. The festival contributes to fostering the capacity of cadres and teachers in educating cultural traditions, ethics and life skills for students; raising awareness of preserving and promoting traditional cultural beauty for students; creating a healthy and useful playground for exchanging and learning experiences between PTDTBT schools in particular and schools in the province in general. Thereby, contributing to strengthening the coordination between schools, families and society in educating ethnic culture for the younger generation.
Meritorious teacher Phan My Hanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Lang Son province, affirmed: We highly appreciate the initiative and creativity of schools in bringing national culture closer to students. The diverse and rich activities have created a lively and attractive learning environment, helping students not only acquire knowledge but also foster love for their homeland and national pride. The Department of Education and Training will continue to direct and support schools so that this work can be increasingly effective.
With continuous efforts and promising initial results, schools in Lang Son province are increasingly affirming their role as one of the effective "channels" for preserving, promoting and advertising folk culture, with the potential to spread widely in the community. In the coming time, the provincial Department of Education and Training will continue to promote this work, encouraging the creativity and exploration of schools in bringing ethnic culture into schools in a practical and attractive way. From there, equipping the younger generation with a solid cultural foundation, helping them to appreciate, preserve and promote the good cultural identities of the nation, contributing to building a bright future with strong identity.
