Switzerland has committed to supporting a total of CHF 650 million (equivalent to USD 800 million) over 35 years of development cooperation in Vietnam.
On May 29, the Swiss Embassy held an important event to celebrate 35 years of development cooperation with many practical results between Vietnam and Switzerland, and introduced the Cooperation Program for the period 2025–2028.
The event further affirms the long-term, deep and continuous cooperation between the two countries, developed over more than three decades to support Vietnam’s economic transformation, institutional strengthening and sustainable development. It is also an opportunity to look back and be proud of the trust, common goals and concrete results that have shaped the close cooperation between Vietnam and Switzerland.
Building on these achievements, the Swiss Government will continue to accompany Vietnam on its journey to becoming a high-income and resilient economy. With this vision, the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) will allocate a budget of USD 50 million to support Vietnam for the period 2025 - 2028. Since 2013, Vietnam has been a priority country in SECO's economic development cooperation program.
The focus of the cooperation programme is on areas where Swiss expertise and experience can make a difference. Ambassador Thomas Gass stressed: “The new programme for 2025–2028 builds on Swiss expertise and experience, demonstrating Switzerland’s strong commitment to accompanying Vietnam on its journey to becoming a resilient high-income country by 2045 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The programme’s priorities are fully aligned with Vietnam’s development orientation and make a practical contribution to the plans to open a new era of development for Vietnam.”
Deputy Minister of Finance Cao Anh Tuan and other speakers highlighted the important role of government leadership and private sector innovation in Vietnam’s development. Discussions also highlighted Switzerland’s global leadership in innovation – it has topped the global innovation rankings for 14 consecutive years – and how this experience and knowledge can contribute to promoting private sector development in Vietnam.
Over the past 35 years, Switzerland has supported more than 60 business support organizations, helping more than 10,000 companies to implement innovation initiatives and produce more sustainable exports; nearly 500,000 small and medium-sized enterprises have received an additional USD 33 billion in loans through innovation-linked credit mechanisms.
