Without seedlings, the men in the family went into the coffee forests planted during the French colonial period to collect ripe fruits to grow seedlings or uproot small wild coffee trees to plant, saving up for many years to become coffee plantations. Money for food, school fees, medicine, fertilizer, investment in cultivation… all depended on coffee beans.

My mother remembers that one year the price dropped to 3,800 VND/kg of coffee beans, many people cut down coffee trees to plant other trees. My grandparents and parents still persisted in keeping the coffee plantation because they both regretted and loved the tree that had fed their family since the early days of starting their business. From a livelihood, coffee trees have been attached, familiar, and indispensable to the family. Although many coffee trees were planted, at that time, my family rarely drank coffee because they did not know how to roast and grind it well, until Trung Nguyen coffee was born. As a pride of the homeland, the adults in the family loved to drink Trung Nguyen coffee because of its rich flavor and often told their children and grandchildren about the example of the "coffee king" Dang Le Nguyen Vu, who started a successful business from a poor medical student, making Vietnamese coffee famous in the world. I remember in 2015, when I participated in organizing aneducational event and invited a representative of Trung Nguyen Coffee Company. Although they did not participate, Trung Nguyen thoughtfully sent a car to serve free coffee and sent thousands of books to give to students. It will always be the most meaningful program to me.

The first coffee trees my family planted are now nearly 40 years old. Farmers who persevere with coffee are even more excited when the price of coffee increases to over 90,000 VND/kg. And one thing has remained unchanged over the years, Trung Nguyen coffee is always the great pride of us, the people of the Central Highlands.
