These days the weather is quite favorable, farmers in Bao Thang district (Lao Cai) are focusing on preparing the land and taking care of the 2025 spring-summer corn crop, ensuring the crop schedule.

Ms. Dang Thi May in An Tien village, Son Hai commune (Bao Thang district) grows nearly 2 sao of corn. Currently, the corn fields are growing and developing well. Taking advantage of the favorable weather, her family members go to the fields to weed and hoe the corn.

For Mrs. May’s family, growing corn is not just for sale but also to meet the essential needs of raising livestock and poultry. By being proactive in the source of animal feed, her family reduces the cost of buying bran and has a higher income.

"Last September, floods severely affected my family's farmland. Therefore, I, like many other households, received 2kg of corn seeds to plant in the damaged area," Ms. May shared.

Along with seed support, agricultural extension officers also went to the fields to instruct people on how to prepare the soil and plant corn effectively. Thanks to that, the entire corn area of the households achieved a survival rate of over 95%.

According to the agricultural extension officer of Son Hai commune, growing corn is relatively simple, however, to achieve high productivity, it is still necessary to pay attention to some factors such as choosing good varieties, suitable for climate and soil conditions, and resistant to pests and diseases. Corn prefers to be planted in loose soil, so people need to plow thoroughly, clean weeds, apply NPK fertilizer before planting and plant at the right time frame...

Ms. Dao Thi Tuyet's family, also in An Tien village, is currently mobilizing all their workforce to take care of the corn in the fields. "This spring-summer crop, my family planted more than one sao of corn. Corn is easy to grow, but that doesn't mean we should neglect it. It must be cared for at the right time to produce high yields. When pests and diseases are detected, immediate measures must be taken," Ms. Tuyet shared her experience.

This spring-summer crop, Bao Thang district aims to plant 1,755 hectares of corn. Up to this point, people have planted over 70% of the area, equivalent to 1,230 hectares, mainly concentrated in the communes of Phong Hai, Xuan Quang, Tri Quang, Phu Nhuan... With the goal of planting corn in the spring-summer crop to compensate for the damage caused by storms and floods last year, corn varieties are carefully selected, meeting the local climate and soil conditions well.

The varieties included in the structure all have good drought resistance, pest resistance, high productivity and economic efficiency such as: NK varieties (6101, 6275, 7328,4300, 4300BT/GT, 66BT/GT); CP511, CP111, CP311, CP519; B9698, B06, B265; LVN885, LVN10, VS36; SSC 557, HN92; PAC 339, PAC 995, PAC789; DK (6919S, 9979C) and waxy corn varieties HN68, HN88...

According to Mr. Nguyen The Truong, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Bao Thang district, thanks to planting on schedule, following technical procedures and investing in fertilization, the corn fields in Bao Thang are currently growing and developing well, and are expected to start harvesting in mid-June.

Currently, farmers in Bao Thang district are actively caring for, weeding and fertilizing the corn fields that have been planted, and proactively monitoring the situation of pests and diseases to have timely and effective prevention measures. Specialized agencies also regularly exchange and monitor the planted areas to grasp the situation and support farmers in planting and caring for them properly.
