The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has ordered residents to leave several areas in Gaza, including several residential areas in southern Gaza, after they continued their military operation over the weekend.
“Those who have been asked to evacuate have nowhere safe to go and no way to survive,” the Secretary-General said.
Evacuation areas in Gaza
Since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas expired on December 1, fighting and airstrikes in Gaza have resumed. The IDF has issued several maps indicating new attack zones and has warned residents to evacuate these areas as it begins its assault on Hamas. However, it is unclear how many residents have been warned; Gaza’s telecommunications and energy infrastructure has been severely damaged by weeks of bombing.

Mr. Guterres said he was extremely alarmed by the continuing conflict between Israel, Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups in Gaza.
According to a statement issued by Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, he urged Israeli forces to try to avoid causing civilian casualties and actions that could make the “dire humanitarian situation” worse.
“Civilians – including health workers, journalists and UN staff – as well as civilian infrastructure must be protected at all times.”
The statement also stated that Mr. Guterres was extremely concerned about the escalation of violence in the West Bank, including many deaths or arrests, the situation of Israeli military operations and the increasingly widespread violence from Israeli immigrants mixed with Palestinian attacks on Israelis.
