This land was unexpectedly revived in a modern novel for children, Panduranga Grassland ( photo, Kim Dong Publishing House, author Le Duc Duong). However, it does not focus on historical layers but instead depicts a world of children that is both vivid and romantic, right on the land considered to have the harshest living conditions and climate in the country.
This is a story about shepherds on the steppe with their herds of cattle living according to the customs of the Cham and Raglai indigenous people, which seems very strange to the urbanites from other places. It was probably not easy for the author to integrate into that common life in the middle of the wilderness with herds of goats, sheep, brave herding dogs, clever monkeys, ferocious beasts, flash floods... to be able to produce extremely delicate and truthful writings, with vivid emotions like each film appearing before the eyes.
Readers are led into a half-real, half-unreal world, it is hard to believe that in this era there are still poor, uneducated children wandering around, leading their livestock to escape drought; scenes of getting lost in the forest, forest fires, scenes of wild boars being attacked by leopards, scenes of overcoming floods... Included in that journey is the beautiful friendship of Tham - a 16-year-old girl, and Len - her boyfriend who grew up together overcoming many challenges, in the sound of the saranai trumpet, the sound of the paranung drum, the gentle sound of the chapi zither resounding on the vast steppe... The land of Cham appears truly magical with unique festivals imbued with national identity and epic in nature such as Kate festival, Ramưwan festival, the Y trang welcoming ceremony, the Ton chuc ceremony...
The Panduranga steppe is a work written for children, so it has a rather poetic style, skillfully and attractively combining magical fairy tales and harsh reality, exuding the light of national culture, of compassion and aspirations for the future. Throughout the story, there are always the chirping sounds of countless natural sounds between the earth and sky, the laughter and crying of herds of shepherds and animals, the sound of rain and wind... creating an eternal song of freedom.
Le Duc Duong is a writer with many works for children, most notably Eren the Whale arrives at Hon Mun , Kim Dong Publishing House won the C prize of the 2022 National Book Award.
