Whirlpool warning flag. |
* Reporter: What are the characteristics of the beaches in Vung Tau City this season, sir?
- Mr. Pham Khac To: Ba Ria-Vung Tau sea is affected by the Northeast and Southwest monsoons, land and sea winds blowing day and night, creating complex coastal currents. In Vung Tau City alone, except for Bai Truoc and Bai Dau, which have few waves, Bai Sau - a favorite swimming spot for tourists - often has big waves and strong winds, creating complex coastal currents and whirlpools, which are dangerous for swimmers.
Whirlpools form in large diameters, with steep and deep banks during the north wind season (from November to March). From April to October, the southwest wind will gradually shrink the mouth of the whirlpool. However, due to the influence of tides and currents, whirlpools continue to shift position, becoming a “trap” for beachgoers if not detected and promptly warned.
In addition, Bai Sau also has a strong current flowing from the shore, called the Rip current. The speed of the Rip current is extremely fast, about 2m/s, so in a split second, swimmers will be swept away from the shore if they fall into the Rip current. In addition, the end of April is also the time when the weather is at the beginning of the rainy season. Storms suddenly occur in the afternoon, causing buoys to drift and capsize while swimming. In the Bai Dua area, in front of Nirvana Tinh Xa, there is also a strong cold current that makes swimmers panic and afraid if they accidentally fall into it.
* Given the above situation, what measures are being implemented to ensure safety for beachgoers?
- During the April 30 and May 1 holidays this year, the number of people swimming at Bai Sau beach is forecast to increase dramatically. Swimming hours will also start earlier and end later to avoid the heat. Therefore, the city is particularly concerned about ensuring safety for beachgoers.
The center has 23 lifeguards and 2 doctors on duty. Thuy Van Beach Service Cooperative and Vung Tau Tourism Cooperative are operating the beach service from Nghinh Phong Cape to Green Hotel with 6 lifeguards plus 40 lifeguards from Tam Hoang Thien Company (the unit that won the bid to provide essential services for beach bathing and beach rescue during the renovation of Thuy Van road), ensuring that there is 1 lifeguard every 50 to 70m of coastline.
The forces will coordinate shifts to perform tasks such as guiding safe swimming and water rescue such as identifying dangerous currents, identifying whirlpools, moving black flags to mark whirlpool locations, installing buoys to mark safe swimming areas, and observing directly and remotely from the beach with binoculars.
When detecting people swimming near the whirlpool, the rescue team will sound a siren to remind them to move away from the danger zone. The rescue team will also promptly mobilize human resources, ambulances, jet skis, medical supplies, and medical staff to respond promptly when an accident occurs. Rescuers are on duty from 6am to 6pm every day. During the April 30 holiday, beach duty will start from 5:30am to after 6pm.
* Do you have any advice for beachgoers?
- According to the weather forecast of the provincial Hydrometeorological Station, the April 30 holiday will be sunny, with light winds and calm seas, which is favorable for tourism and swimming, but do not be negligent or subjective. People swimming in the sea should not swim too early or too late outside of lifeguard duty hours. In fact, there have been a number of cases of stroke that were not rescued in time due to swimming too early.
During the fun, swimmers must obey the whistles and instructions of professional lifeguards, and not swim near areas with black flags. People who have consumed alcohol or beer should not swim. People with heart disease, mental illness, or high blood pressure must be accompanied by someone and swim close to shore. Children under 13 years old must be accompanied by an adult. People who cannot swim must wear a life jacket and use a life buoy with a strap when going into the sea. Before going into the sea, you need to warm up your body for 3 to 5 minutes.
In Vung Tau City, there are also places for swimming and watching the sea, reducing the load on Back Beach such as: Front Beach, Pineapple Beach, Vong Nguyet Beach, Chi Linh Beach... The City People's Committee has assigned relevant agencies and units to develop a coordination plan to ensure security and order, environmental sanitation, safe swimming, and parking for tourists and people to enjoy and sightsee during the April 30 and May 1 holidays. |
If you accidentally fall into a whirlpool or strong current, calmly swim through the axis of the whirlpool in both directions, while waving your hands to signal for help from people on the shore or professional rescue workers.
Currently, some items of the Thuy Van road renovation project are gradually being completed. The section from Nghinh Phong slope to the Imperial hotel can be walked and visited. However, visitors and residents should not enter construction sites. In case of needing help finding lost people, lost documents, property, etc., please contact the rescue team on duty at the nearest beach for timely support.
* Thank you!
