From dawn on May 1, 247 swimmers gathered at Da Nang beach to compete, including many international tourists.
The contest aims to encourage sportsmanship, prevent drowning, promote the movement of training to improve health, love the sea and promote the image of Da Nang beach as dynamic, friendly, hospitable and diverse with attractive activities.
The competition includes a 1,000m freestyle swimming race for women (14 - under 40 years old and over 40 years old) and men (14 - 29 years old; 30 - 49 years old and over 50 years old).
The 2,500 m and 5,000 m distances include female (14 - under 40 years old and over 40 years old) and male (14 - 29 years old; 30 - 39 years old; 40 - 49 years old and over 50 years old) categories.
Among the competitors, although the ages of participants ranged from 14 to 69, there were many men and women over 70 years old. Ms. Pham Thi Toai (72 years old) was the oldest athlete. She won first prize in the 1,000 m event for women over 40 years old. The second and third place winners in this event were athlete Nguyen Thi Phuoc (50 years old) and athlete Tran Thi Kim Thanh (54 years old).
Notably, the above trio has a performance record that makes younger people respect when the 1,000m completion times of the 3 people are 25 minutes 54 seconds, 28 minutes 27 seconds and 34 minutes 32 seconds respectively.
Ms. Pham Thi Toai ranked 8th out of 38 male and female athletes of all ages in the 1,000m time table, far surpassing the achievements of many younger people. Ms. Toai is also the only female athlete in the top 10 rankings for male and female achievements in this distance.
