In the fourth round of Roland Garros 2025 (French Open), Alcaraz created an unbelievable shot against Ben Shelton.
However, the Spaniard showed himself to be an example of sportsmanship when he admitted to throwing his racket at the ball.
The incident occurred when Shelton hit a powerful passing shot from the baseline, and Alcaraz appeared to have a great backhand stop-volley in a full stretch, before losing control of the racquet.
Instead of celebrating, Alcaraz immediately shook his finger at the chair umpire to signal that it was not an illegal shot. At the last moment of reaching out to touch the ball, he threw his racket at the ball – and tennis rules require players to grip the racket at the moment of contact.
"I thought it was a legal shot. I thought he hit a volley, and then the racket just flew out of his hand. I was a little surprised when he said he made a mistake," Shelton said in a post-match press conference.

Alcaraz finally won dramatically with a result of 3-1 (7-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4) to advance to the quarterfinals.
“It's a shame, because it was the best shot of the day,” he said afterwards with a regretful smile.
Sharing more about his decision, Alcaraz said: "I thought I would stay silent. But it would be a sin for me not to say anything. I need to speak out, to be honest with myself with Ben, with everyone. It's just about the respect we have for each other, and I think that's what sport in general should be like."
Alcaraz's gesture is particularly valuable because Roland Garros does not use video review technology, which has become standard across the rest of the system. It would be difficult for the chair umpire to see the small gap between his hand and the racket handle at the moment of contact.
The French Open also does not use electronic linesmen, which makes the tournament unique.
