Grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son lost two matches in a row and finished third at the ChessKid Cup, part of the Champions Chess Tour online rapid chess tournament.

In the winner bracket final against Vladimir Fedoseev, Truong Son lost 1-3 with similar scenarios. Vietnam's number two player spent too much time in the opening and middle game, so he often had only a few seconds left even before the endgame. Due to running out of time, he made weak moves, leading to defeat in three games.

Truong Son fell into the loser bracket final to meet former world number two Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Against a stronger opponent, the Vietnamese representative caused a surprise by winning the first game. However, Mamedyarov equalized the score in the next game. In the deciding game, Truong Son made a mistake right from the start and lost a piece, leading to a 1-2 defeat.

Mamedyarov reached the final of the second-tier ChessKid Cup against Fedoseev on May 26, while Truong Son finished in third place. The 33-year-old player left the tournament with $6,000 in prize money and 20 Champions Chess Tour points.

The grand final of the first place was between Uzbekistan prodigy Nodirbek Abdusattorov and former world runner-up Fabiano Caruana, while the final of the third place was between Grandmaster Alan Pichot and Pentala Harikrishna.

ChessKid Cup takes place from May 22 to May 26, the third stage of the Champions Chess Tour 2023 system, including three divisions. Vietnam has three representatives who passed the qualifying round, all in the second division: Truong Son, Le Quang Liem and Le Tuan Minh. Quang Liem and Tuan Minh stopped the day before, and are all in the Top 8.

Champions Chess Tour (CCT) is the world's leading online rapid chess tournament, initiated by the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, with a prize fund of $2 million in 2023. The tournament consists of eight stages, including the semi-finals and the season finale in December.
