According to Specialist Doctor I Vo Phi Au, Head of the Neonatal Department of the Ca Mau Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, after more than 80 days of intensive treatment, the premature baby girl was discharged in good health. This is also the first case in which the hospital successfully supported a baby born extremely prematurely at 25 weeks.
The baby girl is the child of mother VTTN (residing in Khanh Lam commune, Ca Mau province). The baby was born normally at 6:50 a.m. on August 18, at U Minh Medical Center, 3 months earlier than the expected date of birth (November 29, 2025). Immediately after birth, the baby cried weakly, groaned and was transferred to Ca Mau Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital at 9:00 a.m. the same day in a state of severe respiratory failure.

Here, the team of the Neonatal Department urgently placed the baby in an incubator, provided non-invasive respiratory support, administered complete intravenous nutrition and used antibiotics. In particular, the doctors consulted and used Surfactant (which helps expand the lungs) through the trachea using a minimally invasive method.

The baby's journey of more than 80 days was a series of non-stop efforts. After 7 days of intensive resuscitation, the baby began to practice drinking milk through a gastric tube. On the 20th day, the baby stopped non-invasive respiratory support, switched to oxygen therapy and was cared for by the Kangaroo method with his mother. The baby stopped using oxygen completely on the 40th day and started to breastfeed completely at 58 days old.

On the day of discharge, the baby weighed 2kg, adjusted gestational age 35 weeks, breathing air independently and exclusively breastfeeding. The results of retinal disease screening and cochlear ultrasound measurements showed no abnormalities.

Sharing more with reporters, Dr. Vo Phi Au said that extremely premature babies are a "very fragile" group of patients. Organs such as the lungs, heart, brain, and kidneys are not yet fully developed, making them susceptible to dangerous complications such as severe respiratory failure, hypothermia, pulmonary hemorrhage, cerebral hemorrhage, or severe infection...
Therefore, controlling and stabilizing the temperature, using drugs to support early lung expansion, and calculating every milliliter of intravenous fluids and medications are of utmost importance. “For a 25-week-old baby weighing less than 1kg to overcome the critical stage, it requires the harmonious coordination between departments, the dedication of the medical team, and the trust of the patient's family,” Dr. Vo Phi Au emphasized.
The above success is a great motivation for the medical team in Ca Mau. According to statistics, from 2024 to October 2025, the Neonatal Department of Ca Mau Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital treated 252 premature babies, with a survival rate of 87.3%. In 2025 alone, the hospital successfully saved 5 cases of babies weighing less than 1kg (≤ 1000gr).
