Miracles from Vietnamese medicine
Recently, a Singaporean pregnant woman traveled thousands of kilometers to Vietnam to seek hope for her fetus with aortic valve stenosis, a rare congenital heart defect that is considered “without a chance of survival”. According to her medical history, the 41-year-old pregnant woman became pregnant for the first time after more than 10 years of infertility through in vitro fertilization (IVF), and was due to give birth in September. Given the patient’s situation, Singaporean doctors proactively referred the pregnant woman to Ho Chi Minh City for treatment, which has the first facility in Southeast Asia to successfully perform fetal cardiac intervention recently.
Upon arriving in Vietnam, the pregnant woman was assessed by Children's Hospital 1 for congenital heart abnormalities in the fetus. Afterwards, the fetal intervention and congenital heart intervention teams of Children's Hospital 1 and Tu Du quickly held an inter-hospital and international consultation (with experts from Australia and France), all of whom agreed on the diagnosis and the need for early intervention to save the fetus. The team performed the first intervention on May 22, but it was not successful. On May 28, the second intervention was successful, and the fetus that was once considered "without a chance to live" now had a miracle.
The moment the blood was drained back to the fetus's heart was also the moment the whole team burst into tears, the doctors and the family hugged each other, crying with emotion. Sharing with the media, Dr. CKII Vuong Dinh Bao Anh - Deputy Director of Tu Du Hospital said: "At the end of the intervention, more than 20 members of the team burst into tears. No one said anything, just tears. Both us and the pregnant woman's husband hugged the team, crying and saying thank you. For me, it was an unforgettable experience in my entire career."
Expectations for the healthcare industry to reach regional and world levels
The fact that Vietnamese doctors have successfully performed fetal cardiac intervention, a specialized technique that even Singaporean doctors have not yet implemented, is clear evidence that the expertise of our country's medical team is completely capable of performing advanced medical techniques, not inferior to those of developed countries. At the same time, this success also ignites strong belief in the goal of making Vietnam a specialized medical center in the region.
According to the Ministry of Health , on average, each year there are about 300,000 people from abroad coming to Vietnam for medical examination and treatment, and this number is increasing day by day. One of the factors that makes Vietnam an attractive medical destination is not only the reasonable cost of treatment but also the increasingly improved quality of health care services, the skills of Vietnamese doctors are not inferior to those in developed countries,...
Reality has proven that the Vietnamese healthcare sector has repeatedly affirmed its professional capacity by successfully treating complex cases for patients from abroad, gradually building its reputation with the international community. Since then, more and more foreigners have chosen Vietnam as a destination for medical examination and treatment, opening up opportunities for the Vietnamese healthcare sector to reach regional and world levels. Grasping and maximizing this potential, in recent years, the healthcare sector in general and major hospitals across the country in particular have continuously innovated comprehensively, from improving the quality of human resources, modernizing facilities to expanding international cooperation.
Dr. Duong Huy Luong - Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, Ministry of Health, once assessed that the awareness of medical examination and treatment facilities has changed, taking patients as the center of service, taking patient satisfaction as the top criterion to evaluate service quality. Many hospitals have invested resources in science, technology, hospital management, and improving service quality. Dr. Duong Huy Luong also informed that the Government is encouraging public hospitals as well as private hospitals to develop into specialized medical centers, including hospitals that reach regional and world standards.
