According to information from the Lai Chau Provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue (PCTT&TKCN), at around 10:30 this morning (May 16), at the construction site of the Ta Pao Ho 1A hydropower project in Lan Nhi Thang village, Si Lo Lau commune, Phong Tho district, a group of 9 workers from Dung Phuc Loc Construction Investment Joint Stock Company (headquartered in Nghe An province) were excavating sand to straighten the flow of Ta Pao Ho stream to prepare for construction when rocks and soil on the positive slope collapsed, causing the following human losses:

The 5 missing people include: Luong Van Ha (Male, 1987, Nghe An ), Phan Lao Lo (Male, 2009, Lai Chau), Ly Lao San (Male, 2008, Lai Chau), Tan U May (Female, 1984, Lai Chau), Tan Su May (Female, 1986, Lai Chau). The 4 injured people include: Doan Van Vinh (Male, 1984, Nghe An), Lu Van Phan (Male, 1985, Nghe An), Lu Van Than (Male, 1985, Nghe An), Luong Van Sinh (Male, 1970, Nghe An).
The initial cause was determined to be due to the prolonged heavy rains in the area over the past few days causing landslides. Currently, 150 provincial and district forces have arrived at the scene to inspect, verify and search for victims.
The Ta Pao Ho 1A Hydropower Project exploits the conduit type including 1 main dam to raise water and 3 auxiliary dams to collect water, the total length of the water conduit tunnels is 4.2km, of which the main pressure tunnel is about 2km long, with a calculated water column of 281.71m, the plant uses 2 vertical shaft bucket turbines, the installed capacity is 13.5MW.
The Ta Pao Ho 1A and Ta Pao Ho 1B Hydropower Project Clusters have a capacity of 24MW, with a total investment of 911 billion VND, and are 2 of 8 hydropower projects being invested by Kosy Group in Lai Chau and Dien Bien provinces.
