World Environment Day on June 5, 2025 has the theme “Fighting Plastic Pollution”. Plastic waste, when released into the environment, is non-biodegradable, polluting the soil, water and air, and is becoming one of the most serious global environmental challenges today.

Officials, civil servants, and public employees of Lac Duong district and nearly 300 agricultural households in the Dan Kia - Suoi Vang upstream area participated in the tree planting campaign.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc Phuc said that Lam Dong launched activities in response to World Environment Day on June 5 throughout the province with the theme "Reducing plastic waste - Collecting and classifying waste at source", calling on all people to take specific, practical and meaningful actions to protect the living environment, protect public health and preserve a sustainable future for future generations.

The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee emphasized that Lac Duong was chosen as the place to launch the response to World Environment Day this year because it is the source of many large rivers in the country. The generation of waste, discharge, failure to collect or improperly treat plastic waste, household waste, and agricultural waste will directly affect the quality of water sources, threatening the health of millions of people. "The message of World Environment Day this year emphasizes action, from the smallest things, in each household, each agency, and business, thereby creating big changes for the whole community," he said.

Youth union members of Lac Duong town participate in collecting household waste along Dan Kia lake

Dan Kia Lake, in Lac Duong, currently serves as the main reservoir, providing clean water for hundreds of thousands of households in Da Lat City as well as Lac Duong District. However, in recent years, uncontrolled living, farming, tourism and production activities in the area around the lake are creating increasing pressure on the water environment. In particular, plastic waste, nylon bags, bottles - pesticide packaging, if not properly treated, will pollute water sources and seriously affect the quality of life of the entire province.

During the early rainy season these days, a large amount of household waste flows into Dan Kia Lake - the place that supplies domestic water to residents of Da Lat city and Lac Duong town.

Therefore, on the occasion of World Environment Day this year, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc Phuc requested authorities at all levels, departments, branches, organizations, enterprises and schools in the province to take the lead in synchronously implementing solutions to reduce, collect, classify and treat waste at source, especially in residential areas, markets, schools, agencies and tourist areas; strengthen inspection and supervision of waste discharge activities, especially in the upstream area of Dan Kia Lake and surrounding areas; mobilize investment resources and upgrade the waste collection and treatment system in Lac Duong district and related localities.

To affirm Lam Dong province's determination to protect the environment and respond to World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, contributing to reducing environmental pollution from plastic waste, Mr. Phuc called on every citizen and every family in the province to proactively collect and treat waste according to regulations; minimize the use of disposable plastic products; classify waste at the source; increase the reuse and recycling of plastic materials.

He also suggested that mass organizations, schools, union members and youth need to coordinate to strengthen propaganda and education on environmental protection awareness; organize practical activities such as "Green Sunday", "Collecting recyclable waste", "Garbage-free routes"; link environmental protection with patriotic emulation movements and building new rural areas and civilized urban areas.

In particular, in wards, communes and towns located in the basin and upstream areas of water sources, localities need to tighten control of waste, domestic and production wastewater; not let used pesticide bottles and packaging, plastic waste, and domestic waste be dumped into canals, rivers and lakes; coordinate with water supply units and the Department of Agriculture and Environment to monitor and protect safe water sources.

“Environmental protection is no longer a slogan but needs to become a regular, voluntary and specific action in our daily lives. Lam Dong People's Committee commits to continue issuing support policies and investing in waste collection and classification at source, promoting the circular economy, raising awareness and creating conditions for all people in the province to participate,” affirmed Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc Phuc.

After the launching ceremony, delegates and local people joined forces to clean up trash around Dan Kia Lake and plant trees (cherry blossoms) around the Dan Kia - Saigon water plant in Lac Duong district.
