The exercise, called “ASEAN Solidarity Exercise” (ASEX 01-Natuna), will take place around Indonesia’s Batam and Natuna Islands and will last until September 23. Warships are expected to sail from Batam Island to the Natuna Islands area; aircraft will participate in the exercise with air support. The Indonesian military said the exercise will include joint maritime patrols, medical evacuation, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in simulated affected areas.
According to Indonesia's military commander, Admiral Yudo Margono, the exercise is expected to enhance regional stability and "boost the economies of ASEAN member countries".
