Can Tho Central General Hospital has just successfully performed nerve freeze technique to treat chronic pain. This is the first time this technique has been deployed in the Mekong Delta, affirming the great progress of local healthcare in accessing and applying modern medical achievements.

Specialist Doctor Nguyen Huu Nghiem, Deputy Head of the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation ( Can Tho Central General Hospital) said that the nerve freezing technique (Cryoneurolysis/Cryoanalgesia) brings high treatment efficiency for cases of pain related to peripheral sensory nerves.

The technique uses a small probe to the target location, using extremely low temperatures (-800C) to cause reversible degeneration of nerves, thereby achieving effective pain treatment.

In medicine, this method is applied to treat acute post-surgical pain, chronic pain in many areas of the body such as pain due to spinal degeneration (spinal spurs), pain due to knee osteoarthritis, intercostal neuralgia... This method is minimally invasive and highly safe.

During the procedure, the patient is completely awake, injected with local anesthesia and can go home the same day.

For example, a male patient TMV (52 years old, residing in Ca Mau province) had persistent back pain for more than 10 years, and had been treated in many places but it did not improve. After being prescribed the nerve freezing technique, the persistent pain was greatly reduced, helping Mr. V gradually return to work and life as before.

According to Specialist II Doctor Pham Thanh Phong, Deputy Director of Can Tho Central General Hospital, in order for this technique to be implemented, the hospital has made careful preparations from training personnel to equipping modern machinery...

The hospital's medical team has been trained in specialized techniques under an international cooperation program with Switzerland. In particular, Professor Eric Buchser, a leading expert in pain treatment from Morges Hospital (Switzerland), directly participates in training, technology transfer and professional guidance for the medical team of Can Tho Central General Hospital.

The successful implementation of nerve cryotherapy by Can Tho Central General Hospital opens up great hope for patients suffering from chronic pain; at the same time, affirms the hospital's position as a specialized medical unit in the Mekong Delta./.
