A representative of the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction) said that from the beginning of June 2025, the unit will install pedestrian crossing warning lights (green - red) in front of No. 18 Ton Duc Thang Street, Ben Nghe Ward.

Help pedestrians cross the street safely

According to the center, this is a solution to enhance visual perception and ensure traffic safety for pedestrians when crossing the street at the designated location. At the same time, it helps pedestrians easily recognize the location of the crossing and the location to stop and wait for traffic lights.

Specifically, the center will install lights right at the crosswalk in front of 18 Ton Duc Thang. The pedestrian crossing warning lights will be installed on the sidewalk and parallel to the curb on both sides of the crosswalk.

At the traffic light pole in front of 18 Ton Duc Thang, there is a button for pedestrians to be proactive when pedestrians want to cross the street at the above two locations.

The stages of operation are as follows:

Phase 1: When the button is activated, the traffic light for vehicles passing through the route changes from flashing yellow to green for a period of 30 seconds. At this time, the traffic flow continues to pass safely to avoid sudden damage to the driver, the pedestrian signal light changes to red at the same time.

The pedestrian crossing lights on the sidewalk turn on red, warning pedestrians to stop and wait in a safe position.

Phase 2: After the green traffic light timer on the traffic light pole ends, the traffic light for vehicles on the route turns yellow for 3 seconds and then continues to turn red (about 20 seconds) for vehicles on Ton Duc Thang Street to stop and wait in front of the pedestrian crossing.

At this time the pedestrian signal light turns green, the sidewalk indicator lights turn green for pedestrians to cross the street.

Phase 3: After the red traffic light timer on the traffic light pole ends, the traffic light for vehicles turns yellow for 3 seconds and then flashes yellow for vehicles to continue. At this time, the pedestrian crossing light on the sidewalk with green light turns off, ending the operation.

People support installing more pedestrian crossing warning lights

Tuoi Tre Online recorded the operation of this warning light set at night. The traffic light in front of 18-20 Ton Duc Thang Street is often yellow, and vehicles continuously pass through the area.

When a pedestrian wants to cross the street and presses the button at the traffic light, the traffic light immediately changes from yellow to green, and at the same time the pedestrian signal light and the two rows of warning lights at the crosswalk light up red.

When the traffic light turns red, the pedestrian signal and the two rows of warning lights at the crosswalk turn green.

At this time, the traffic stops at the red light and pedestrians can easily cross the street along the pedestrian crossing conveniently and safely.

Talking to Tuoi Tre Online , some pedestrians said that the traffic light system at the above location helps pedestrians cross the street more easily and safely. "Because there are warning lights to attract the attention of pedestrians, they stop according to regulations, pedestrians cross the street according to regulations, so they feel more secure and safe," said Ms. Thanh Thao - a pedestrian.

Nearby, a building security guard shared: "The warning lights at the pedestrian crossing were installed in recent days. Pedestrians just need to press the button and wait for the warning light to turn green to be able to cross the street easily. Many passersby expressed their interest and support for expanding the above "soft solution" to other locations with similar traffic situations."
