Ms. Lo Thi Thien, Head of the Intergenerational Self-Help Club (LTHTGN) in Ban Hiem village, Ban Lam commune, Thuan Chau district, Son La province, is not only a shining example in the movement to build a cultured, prosperous and happy family; she and her husband also stand side by side, constantly learning to develop the economy and enrich themselves legitimately on their homeland.
Building a happy and prosperous family
Ms. Thien believes that “family is the cell of society”, therefore, couples who are conscious of building family happiness are always preserved even though the modern pace of life drags them into the whirlwind of work. Therefore, to make the family stronger, each husband and wife need to spend more time together, do housework and take care of the children. In addition, couples should create space and time for the family through picnics and travel to create connections, understand each other better, and overcome the storms together to have a happy family.
Identifying that family is an important environment for forming, nurturing andeducating human personality, family members must respect and help each other to progress, creating a healthy environment and preventing social evils. Building a happy family not only brings a prosperous life to each individual but also brings a peaceful life to the community. Therefore, building a cultured, prosperous, equal, progressive and happy family is also a prerequisite for the couple to focus on economic development and participate in local activities.

When asked about the secret to “keeping the fire” of family happiness, Mrs. Thien confided: “Talking about the secret seems too big. In my opinion, women in the family must know how to give up their ego for the common good. After decades of living together, my husband and I have had times when “the rice is not going well, the soup is not sweet” but we both know when to stop, consider the problem to find a solution.”
Participate in social work
As the Chairwoman of the LTHTGN Club, she and 65 members have organized well activities such as increasing income; health care; self-help, community support; protecting rights and interests; raising awareness and knowledge; caring for spiritual life; mobilizing resources. Actively propagating and mobilizing people and ethnic minorities in the locality where they reside to comply with the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws, regulations, conventions, and village and clan conventions. Mobilizing people to maintain order, consolidate and strengthen the great solidarity of ethnic groups, preserve and promote traditional cultural identities. Therefore, in recent years, the political security situation in the village has always been stable, the economy has developed, and people's lives have increasingly improved.
Responding to the program of building new rural areas and civilized urban areas, she mobilized her children, grandchildren, and people to contribute ideas, labor, and support thousands of square meters of land, hundreds of working days, and over 100 million VND to pour concrete on village roads, alleys, sports fields, and build cultural houses. Together with the Elderly Association, Women's Association, and Youth Union, she organized a campaign to clean up alleys and roads, plant hundreds of trees and flowers in self-managed road areas, contributing to preserving a green, clean, and beautiful environment, raising awareness and changing people's behavior in environmental protection.
Overcoming difficulties to escape poverty
The couple always realized that the foundation for building a happy and sustainable family must first have a stable economy. Therefore, the couple worked hard and diligently, building the family economy from scratch. She boldly discussed with her husband to invest in growing coffee trees combined with intensive rice cultivation, maintaining the VACR economic model, earning nearly 500 million VND each year. In addition, they also helped 2 poor families borrow capital without interest, and lent them seedlings to increase their income. Over the years, the family has adopted 2 orphaned children who have now grown up and become adults.
Ms. Mui Thi Thuy, Vice President of the Elderly Association of Son La province, said: “Ms. Thien’s family is a typical example of maintaining family happiness in the locality. She is always active and enthusiastic in all activities. She is not only a good wife and mother, but also actively develops the economy, eliminates hunger and reduces poverty, and is always willing to share her experiences in production as well as secrets to maintaining family happiness.”
Thanks to those efforts, for many years, her family has achieved the title of “Cultural Family” and has been commended by all levels. Recently, her family was honored to be recognized as “Outstanding Happy Family” and was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Provincial Women’s Union for their outstanding achievements in “Building a family of 5 no’s and 3 clean’s”. She was elected by the Son La Provincial Elderly Association and the Provincial Women’s Union to attend the National Conference to commend outstanding elderly women for building cultural, prosperous and happy families and was commended by the Central Union.
