Laos dismantles heroin trafficking ring

According to a VNA reporter in Laos, the anti-drug crime force in Bokeo province (Northern Laos) has just successfully dismantled a drug trafficking ring consisting of 400 heroin cakes with a total weight of 160kg.

According to Bokeo Provincial Police, while checking vehicles entering and leaving Namkong Port, the authorities discovered a Mazda car registered in Luang Prabang Province traveling from Tonphong District to Huoisai District with suspicious signs. The authorities conducted an inspection and detained 3 suspects, all residing in Donthat Village, Tonphuong District, Bokeo Province, along with evidence of 400 heroin bricks hidden in the car.

This is considered the largest drug trafficking case in Bokeo province that the police have cracked down on since the beginning of 2023. Authorities are continuing to expand the investigation to trace other links in this drug ring.

Drug trafficking is a major challenge for Lao authorities due to the increasingly complex nature of the cases in both urban and rural areas. This is also one of the causes of many social evils in Laos in recent times.

Laos has previously included drug trafficking in its national agenda for combating the trafficking and transportation of banned substances. The maximum penalty for those found guilty of this crime is the death penalty.
