India's 'hired' programmers are on the verge of extinction due to the explosion of artificial AI

VietNamNetVietNamNet18/07/2023

Most outsourced programmers in India will lose their jobs within the next one to two years, says Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque.

At a meeting with UBS analysts, Mostaque said that the loss of many “hired” programmers to artificial intelligence (AI) also means that software can now be developed with much less manpower.

“Traditional” programming jobs will be replaced by generative AI services.

“Different jobs are affected in different ways,” Mostaque said. “If you work in front of a computer and no one can see you, the impact is huge because AI models are now at the level of the most talented graduates.”

The impact of AI on the job market will also be governed by the rules and regulations of each country. However, in countries with strict labor laws, the impact will be more modest.

“In France, a developer is rarely laid off. But in India, freelance programmers or third-level software developers are likely to be unemployed in the next one to two years,” said Stability AI CEO.

According to Bloomberg, India is home to more than 5 million software developers, who are the most at risk from the impact of advanced AI tools like ChatGPT.

Asia’s second-largest country has long been a prime location for companies to outsource work. Silicon Valley tech giants, Wall Street banks, airlines and retailers are all clients of Indian outsourcing firms.

India's largest software outsourcing service providers include Tata (TCS) - also a multinational IT services consulting company, Infosys and Wipro.

TCS has made a big bet on generative AI, pledging to provide more than 25,000 technologists to Microsoft’s Azure Open AI service to “help customers accelerate the adoption of powerful new technologies.”

TCS CEO N. Ganapathy Subramaniam said the company started taking a “machine-first” approach to project delivery about four years ago and saw AI as having a “huge impact on the way humans do things.”

Mostaque once declared that “there will be no programmers” in five years, but also noted that this only applies to “traditional” programmers.

“Why do you need to code when computers can write better code? AI can efficiently do every step of the process from programming, debugging, to brainstorming,” Mostaque explains. “But it won’t do it automatically, which means fewer people are needed for traditional programming.”
