According to the rankings just announced by FIDE, Le Quang Liem has risen to 15th place in the world with an Elo coefficient of 2,740. This is the highest ranking that the number 1 Vietnamese chess player has ever achieved in his career. This achievement of the 32-year-old player is thanks to his successful defense of the championship title at the Biel Chess Festival (Switzerland) which took place last week. That tournament had the presence of many masters such as Yu Yangyi, David Navara, Arjun Erigaisi, Vincent Keymer,... in the Grand Master Triathlon category. In the standard chess content of the tournament, Quang Liem excellently won 4 victories, 2 draws and only lost 1 game. In which, the winning game in the direct confrontation with the top Chinese master and once in the world's top 10 Yu Yangyi helped Quang Liem gain 5.1 more Elo. Through this tournament, Quang Liem has accumulated an additional 11.8 Elo to rise to 15th place in the world. This is also good news for the player from Ho Chi Minh City before he competes in the 2023 Chess World Cup taking place in Baku (Azerbaijan). Le Quang Liem is the Vietnamese player who has advanced the furthest in the World Cup when he reached the fourth round twice in 2013 and 2019. In this year's tournament, Quang Liem is the 15th seed and is exempted from the first round. In the second round, he will face Serbian player Ivan Ivanisevic. Along with Le Quang Liem, Vietnam also has 3 more faces competing, including Le Tuan Minh (male), Vo Thi Kim Phung and Nguyen Thi Mai Hung (female). The 2023 Chess World Cup will take place from July 30 to August 25 in Baku (Azerbaijan) with the participation of 206 male and 106 female players. The tournament will have 8 rounds. Accordingly, from round 1 to round 7, the players will compete in a knockout match. Round 8 is the final round, with the final match for the two best players as well as the third-place match. The total prize money of the 2023 Chess World Cup is up to 2.5 million USD.
