On the morning of May 25, in the capital city of Jakarta, Indonesia, the Vietnamese Embassy in Indonesia solemnly held a memorial service and opened a condolence book to commemorate former Politburo member and former President Tran Duc Luong.
The ceremony was attended by officials and staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Indonesia, the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to ASEAN, officials of the ASEAN Secretariat, representative agencies in Indonesia and the Vietnamese community in Indonesia.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Indonesia Ta Van Thong emotionally recalled the milestones of the leadership tenure of former President Tran Duc Luong, a leader who made great contributions to the cause of building and defending the Vietnamese Fatherland as well as to the development of Vietnam-Indonesia relations.
Under the leadership of former President Tran Duc Luong, many socio -economic development policies and strategies were implemented, aiming to improve people's lives, maintain political stability, ensure national security and defense, and enhance Vietnam's international position.

In particular, in November 2001, former President Tran Duc Luong's visit to Indonesia laid an important foundation for the strong development of bilateral relations thereafter, including the signing of the Declaration on the framework of friendly and comprehensive cooperation entering the 21st century by the two countries during President Megawati Sukarnoputri's official visit to Vietnam in March 2003. This is a decisive document, creating the basis for the two countries to establish a strategic partnership in 2013 and continue to upgrade to a comprehensive strategic partnership during General Secretary To Lam's state visit to Indonesia earlier this year.
