The Ministry of Interior has issued a notice regarding the Lunar New Year and National Day holiday schedule for 2026, providing guidance to agencies, units, organizations, and businesses on its implementation.
In 2026, New Year's Day (January 1st) falls on a Thursday. Therefore, teachers and students at all levels will have a day off on Thursday (January 1st, 2026) and will return to school as usual on Friday (January 2nd, 2026). According to the Labor Code, teachers will still receive their full salary on their day off.
Some localities may consider giving students an extra day off on January 2nd to extend the weekend to four days, but this is not mandatory and requires a separate announcement from the Department of Education and Training.
Many universities nationwide are planning their Lunar New Year holiday schedules for students, staff, and faculty in 2026. Among them, the University of Economics and Finance Ho Chi Minh City is giving students the longest holiday, up to 30 days. Two other universities, the University of Industry and Trade Ho Chi Minh City and the University of Agriculture and Forestry Ho Chi Minh City, are giving students 28 days off. Most other universities are giving students 14 days off.
