Raising loach fish combined with dolphins in rubber-lined tanks is a promising model that the People's Committee of Vi Thanh city (Hau Giang province) is interested in, because this is a new specialty fish farming model with high economic potential.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuoi, in Hamlet 4, Vi Tan Commune, Vi Thanh City ( Hau Giang Province), is the pioneer in bringing two specialty fish, loach and red-tailed catfish, to the locality to raise in combination in rubber-lined tanks.

Each tank has a diameter of 14m, a total volume of 200m3/tank, and is equipped by Ms. Tuoi with a water supply and drainage system, generator, and complete oxygen supply aeration system. Each tank holds 20,000 fingerlings (including 10,000 loach fingerlings and 10,000 red-tailed dolphin fingerlings), reaching a rate of about 50%.

Sharing more about this combined model, Ms. Tuoi said: "After 6 months of raising, the weight of loach will reach 550g/fish, dolphin fish will reach 40-50 fish/kg.

This weight can be sold on the market, with the price of loach fish ranging from 150,000-200,000 VND/kg, red-tailed dolphin fish priced from 300,000-400,000 VND/kg.

The family's fish tank has been stocked for 3 months. With 3 tanks, it is expected to be harvested in time for the Lunar New Year 2025 and bring high profits to the family."

It is known that this is a new model of combined farming. This model has many advantages because farmers do not need a large area of land, reduce operating costs, care, management, control water sources, fish diseases, food sources and miscellaneous fish.

In addition, through initial assessment by the functional sector, the intercropping of loach with freshwater dolphin is very effective. This is also considered a combined farming model with dual impact, bringing profits, by reducing feed costs, because dolphins take advantage of leftover food and waste of loach.

The model of raising loach fish combined with red-tailed catfish - two special fish species in the West - is bringing high prospects to the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuoi, in Hamlet 4, Vi Tan Commune, Vi Thanh City, Hau Giang Province.

Ms. Tuoi confided: “Regarding the process of choosing to combine these two specialty fish, the family went through a process of self-study and research on fish farming methods and techniques, as well as receiving regular attention and monitoring from local technical staff.

The source of the two types of fish was selected and introduced by the Vi Thanh City Agricultural Extension Station from a reputable hatchery with clear origins. The dolphin fry cost 3,700 VND/fish, the loach fry cost 4,500 VND/fish, and were caught from a hatchery in Phung Hiep district.

Despite its many advantages, this model still has many risky factors such as not ensuring output, and with the 1:1 ratio of fish fry between the two types of fish, it is still self-researched and has no scientific basis. During the farming process, both types of fish are still susceptible to some diseases that cause loss of fry, while the investment cost to implement the model is quite high, causing farmers to worry.

Currently, although there are no traders to buy, the consumption of loach and red-tailed catfish is relatively favorable because of high market demand, traders come to the place to buy at quite high prices.

Realizing that the model has the opportunity to bring stable income to the family and has a very good development trend, Ms. Tuoi plans to increase the scale of fish farming to a total of 4 tanks in the near future.

In Vi Thanh city, there are currently many agricultural production models that bring high economic efficiency, contributing to improving the material life and spiritual life of the people.

The model of raising loach fish combined with red-tailed catfish in rubber-lined tanks is predicted to be an outstanding model, bringing high profits to farmers.

Mr. Nguyen Be Sau, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Vi Thanh City, said: The People's Committee of Vi Thanh City, the agricultural extension unit and relevant agencies are closely monitoring the development of this model. If the model proves effective, it will be expanded to other households to help people increase their income.
