Reuters quoted a source as saying that Mr. Trump’s team received a notice from the office of special prosecutor Jack Smith, who is in charge of the investigation, on June 5. The news came two days after Mr. Trump’s lawyers met with US Justice Department officials to discuss the case, an effort that is believed to have prevented the prosecution.

Politico, The New York Times (NYT) and The Wall Street Journal (WSJ ) all said the development was the clearest sign yet that Mr. Trump could soon face criminal prosecution. According to the NYT, Mr. Smith's team has likely completed much of the investigation, and such notices are usually made before prosecutors file charges.
Former President Trump continues to be prosecuted
According to Politico , recent moves signal that Mr. Smith’s investigation is nearing a decision on indictments, possibly “in the next few days, if not hours.” The newspaper said that in recent weeks, Mr. Smith has called several people close to Mr. Trump to testify before a grand jury investigating the handling of classified documents, including lawyer Evan Corcoran. A former spokesman for Mr. Trump, Taylor Budowich, confirmed on June 7 that he had appeared before another grand jury in the state of Florida.
The Florida grand jury story was reported by the WSJ earlier this week, as prosecutors debate whether to proceed in Florida or Washington, DC. Since the investigation is looking into actions Trump took at his Florida resort, some former prosecutors say the Justice Department may need to bring charges where the violations occurred, according to the WSJ . Moving the proceedings to Florida would also help prevent Trump's team from claiming that the former Republican president did not get a fair trial in Democratic-leaning Washington, DC. Trump has denied reports of an impending indictment.
