In a statement, experts warned that the emergence of “superintelligence” poses a range of serious risks. “From the displacement of humans in the economy , the loss of freedom, dignity and control, to national security risks – even the risk of human extinction.”

The signatory group calls for a moratorium on the development of artificial superintelligence until there is scientific consensus and strong public support to ensure the technology can be controlled and operated safely.

The list of signatories includes scientists, scholars, religious leaders, media figures and bipartisan politicians in the US. Among them are prominent names such as: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama - Mike Mullen, former US national security advisor under President Obama - Susan Rice and Steve Bannon - former close advisor to President Donald Trump.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are also on the list, along with former Irish President Mary Robinson. The list continues to grow every day, according to the organization's website.
