Within the framework of the official visit to the UK by General Secretary To Lam and his wife and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son had a bilateral meeting with Baroness Jacqui Smith, UK Minister of Education in charge of skills.
Taking place in an open, sincere and cooperative atmosphere, the meeting exchanged major orientations to strengthen the educational , training and skills development partnership between the two countries.
At the meeting, the two sides agreed to promote cooperation in teacher training and education policy development, whereby the UK will support Vietnam in teacher training, develop policies to make English a second language, and integrate international education programs into the Vietnamese education system.
The two sides also agreed to strengthen cooperation between universities, vocational education and high schools, promote joint training programs, student and lecturer exchanges and credit recognition between the two countries.
Minister Nguyen Kim Son and Deputy Minister Jacqui Smith signed a Letter of Intent and agreed to continue to coordinate towards extending the Memorandum of Understanding between the two Ministries of Education in the coming time.
The two sides agreed to enhance academic exchanges and encourage the establishment of new joint programs, expand cooperation between higher education, vocational and secondary education institutions through exchanges of lecturers, researchers and students, especially in areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and aerospace.
The UK affirmed that it will continue to support Vietnam in promoting English teaching and training, towards the goal of making English the second language in Vietnamese schools by 2035 and enhancing talent development through cooperation between Vietnamese educational institutions, training establishments and schools.
Vietnam welcomes UK educational institutions to set up branches and operate effectively in Vietnam, and encourages the strengthening of transnational educational cooperation, aiming to make Vietnam a new international education hub.
Vietnam also acknowledged the important contribution of the British Council to bilateral relations in areas such as cultural and educational exchanges.
The two sides agreed to cooperate so that the British Council can continue to promote the organization's contributions in accordance with Vietnamese law.
The two sides agreed to "urgently discuss and move towards signing" a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to create a legal foundation for expanding and effectively implementing cooperation programs in the coming time.
The bilateral meeting between Minister Nguyen Kim Son and Deputy Minister Jacqui Smith is an important step in strengthening and expanding the Vietnam-UK educational cooperation relationship, contributing to promoting relations between the two countries.
The agreed contents at the working session opened up many opportunities for practical cooperation in teacher training, skills development and improving the quality of English teaching and learning, towards the goal of building high-quality human resources to meet the requirements of development and international integration of Vietnam./.
