The British government on October 30 announced a record long-term investment of 55 billion pounds ($72.29 billion) in research and development (R&D) to accelerate breakthroughs in areas from healthcare to clean energy.
The announcement said the investment confirmed the UK Government's unprecedented support for national research agencies and institutes until the end of the 2029-2030 period.
This is part of a larger £86bn public investment package in R&D announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
The new recipients of the investment include UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the UK Government's Advanced Research and Innovation Agency (ARIA), the Met Office, national academies, the National Measurement System and the AI Security Institute.
According to UK Government estimates, every £1 of public investment in R&D will generate £8 in far-reaching economic benefits, while attracting an additional £2 of investment from the private sector./.
