Rescue 8 fishermen on a fishing boat that sank off the coast of Con Dao

On the afternoon of October 31, the Ho Chi Minh City Border Guard Command announced that the unit had successfully rescued eight crew members from a fishing boat that sank off the coast of Con Dao.

Specifically, at 4:30 a.m. the same day, fishing boat BT 93839 TS with 8 crew members operating in the sea area 6 nautical miles northwest of Con Dao collided with a cargo ship. The collision caused the fishing boat to sink, and the 8 crew members were promptly transferred to a basket boat.

The position of fishing boat BT 93839 TS is currently about 3 nautical miles from Hon Tre, the vehicle is partially sunk and 8 crew members are on a basket boat, drifting at sea.

Upon receiving the news, Con Dao Border Guard Station (HCMC Border Guard) immediately launched rescue operations. The unit mobilized 5 officers and soldiers and requisitioned fishing boat BV 92927 TS departing from Ben Dam Port, Con Dao Special Zone to urgently approach the scene.

At 7:35 a.m., the authorities approached and brought 8 crew members of fishing boat BT 93839 TS onto fishing boat BV 92927 TS. Fishing boat BT 93839 TS was now about 3 nautical miles from Hon Tre, the vehicle was partially submerged and 8 crew members were drifting at sea.

After approaching, the authorities took the crew members onto the ship and conducted initial health checks. After initial checks, the crew members' health was stable and normal.

Through initial verification, the sunken fishing boat was owned and captained by Mr. Nguyen Van Si (Ba Tri commune, Vinh Long province).

According to the testimony and images provided by the captain of fishing boat BT 93839 TS, at the time of the accident, the captain scanned the AIS device and suspected that the MINAMITO (IMO number 9334985, registration number 3EDC6) collided with the fishing boat.

The sailors in distress were brought safely to Ben Dam port by authorities.

Mr. Nguyen Van Si, captain of fishing boat BT 93839 TS informed: The boat departed on October 30, 2025 from Ham Luong Border Control Station (Vinh Long) to go fishing at sea. At the time of the accident, there were 8 crew members on board. At 4:29 a.m. on October 31, the collision occurred with a cargo ship.

“After the collision, the crew and I tried to fix the problem, but due to the strong collision, the ship was severely damaged and about 2 hours later the ship completely sank into the sea,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Si.

At 9:15 a.m. the same day, the 8 crew members in distress were brought to Ben Dam port by the authorities. Afterwards, Con Dao Border Guard Station continued to work with the crew members, providing health care, food and accommodation support, and completing handover procedures in accordance with regulations.

Currently, the authorities are continuing to coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City Maritime Port Authority to verify the incident. The sunken fishing boat has been anchored 3 nautical miles from Hon Tre, Con Dao.
