Stimulating the “chain effect” from urban underground parking lots
According to Dr. Architect Hoang Ngoc Lan, the underground parking lot at Ben Thanh not only solves the need for static traffic that has existed for many years but also creates a "new way of behaving" with the core urban space.
People can park their cars underground, directly access the metro station to travel to other areas in the city, instead of having to find a parking space or travel by private vehicle. Just a few steps from the underground parking lot to the metro station, people can travel throughout the city without worrying about traffic jams or heat.
“If this underground space is planned synchronously, it will significantly reduce ground pressure, create conditions for public transport to be effective and form new travel habits for people,” said Dr. Architect Hoang Ngoc Lan.

Vingroup proposed to develop an underground space of 12.5 hectares, with the main functions being a metro station, underground parking lot and a commercial service center.
When people are circulated by metro and underground walkways, the downtown area will become more friendly and accessible, thereby promoting economic , commercial and tourism activities. Underground parking is not only an infrastructure project, but also the "starting point" for a closed urban operation circle, from work to shopping, entertainment, moving in the same smart space.
Affirming the important role of underground parking for the central area, Dr. Lan commented that from here, a new urban ecosystem will be stimulated, from transportation, commerce, entertainment, and seamless connection services. Underground parking becomes the starting point of the smart mobility journey, creating momentum for urban economic development, reducing traffic pressure and opening up unprecedented potential for the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
Residents and visitors from all over can conveniently park their vehicles at the underground parking lot, directly access the metro lines and easily move to the central area above ground. The underground space will connect commercial areas, walkways and metro stations, forming a multi-layered network, helping to stimulate people's public transport habits, reduce ground traffic and bring convenient shopping and entertainment experiences.
Unblocking the "underground urban economy", opening the axis towards the sea
From a planning perspective, Dr. Architect Hoang Ngoc Lan sees that in the multi-polar urban structure that Ho Chi Minh City is aiming for, Ben Thanh plays the role of financial core, the South is the service-residential center, and Can Gio is the marine economic pole.
“These three poles need a strong traffic axis to operate seamlessly. The central underground space connecting the metro will be the foundation for that operation,” said Ms. Lan.
Developing underground space is also a measure of the stature of a modern city - where traffic, commerce and tourism are organized in many dimensions, helping to expand living space without occupying more land. If implemented synchronously, Ben Thanh will not only be a central station, but also an "underground hub" connecting the present and the future, where traffic - commerce - tourism operate in the same ecosystem.

According to experts, underground space will become the connecting piece of the existing downtown area with the expanded downtown area, spreading development momentum to the South.
Dr. Pham Viet Thuan, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Natural Resources and Environment Economics, said that investing in underground space around Ben Thanh will bring many values to the socio-economy.
“When traffic is static, the metro and underground commercial areas are connected, the flow of people and capital will move seamlessly. That is the new driving force for the urban economy,” said Dr. Thuan.
Underground space will become a connecting piece between the existing downtown area and the expanded downtown area, spreading the development momentum to the South. Underground space will become an important bridge between the existing downtown area and the expanded downtown areas, spreading the development momentum to the South.
Together with the metro line connecting the high-speed railway from Ben Thanh center to Can Gio, this important traffic axis will become the "backbone" of the urban journey towards the sea, where Ho Chi Minh City is focusing on expanding strategic development space.
