Long An - from the land of "brave and resilient, the whole people fight the enemy" to a position of potential development

50 years since the day the South was completely liberated and the country was unified, it is also the time when Long An province - the land of "brave and resilient, the whole people fighting the enemy" has gone through countless difficulties and challenges, to today proudly stand in the ranks of the most dynamically developing localities in the Mekong Delta region and the whole country.

Turning geographical advantage into competitive advantage

The province's infrastructure is increasingly complete, people's living standards are improved.

In the early days after liberation, Long An province had to face an exhausted economy, lack of infrastructure, and many difficulties in people's lives. However, from those difficulties, the strong will and aspiration to rise up became the driving force for the Party Committee, government, and people of Long An to start building their homeland.

Long An’s journey of innovation and development started from the most basic things: restoring agricultural production, promoting internal irrigation, and developing cooperative economy. Entering the innovation period, Long An quickly grasped market trends, proactively shifting its economic structure from purely agricultural to industrial and service, maximizing the advantages of a “gateway” province between the West and Ho Chi Minh City.

After 50 years, Long An's socio-economic appearance has changed dramatically. Accordingly, the annual economic growth rate has remained high, averaging over 8% in recent times. The economic structure has shifted strongly, with industry and construction accounting for a large proportion (over 60%), becoming the main growth driver.

According to the report on the socio-economic development situation in the first quarter of 2025 of the province, the growth rate of gross regional domestic product (GRDP) reached 7.2%; of which, sector 1 increased by 3.63%, sector 2 increased by 10.02% and sector 3 increased by 6.81%, product tax minus product subsidy increased by 1.12%. With this economic growth rate, Long An ranked 5th out of 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region.

The province has many innovative policies and strategies to attract and develop industry.

Long An today is not only a key “rice granary”, but also an attractive destination for domestic and foreign investors. The province currently has more than 1,500 FDI projects with a total registered capital of over 14 billion USD, and more than 2,200 DDI projects with a total capital of over 500,000 billion VND. In particular, Long An is maintaining its position as the leading locality in the region in attracting foreign direct investment - an achievement that comes from strategic vision, effective administrative reform and companionship with businesses.

These impressive economic growth figures are inseparable from the strong investment in infrastructure and long-term development planning. A series of industrial zones and clusters have been formed; key traffic routes such as the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway, Ring Road 3, and regional connecting routes... are being gradually completed. The province has been making efforts to turn its geographical advantages into real competitive advantages.

However, what makes Long An’s identity is not only its economic achievements, but also the human heart, the culture of affection, the spirit of solidarity and diligence of the people here. The traditional values of a land rich in revolutionary history are still preserved and promoted, along with the dynamic and modern pace of life.

In addition, the province is vigorously implementing digital transformation, building e-government and smart cities. Long An is aiming for a sustainable, smart and environmentally friendly development model, in which people are the center and driving force of development.

Deploy synchronous and specific solutions

Chairman of Long An Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van Ut emphasized: "There is no path to success without determination, consensus and daring to do. That has also been the consistent spirit in Long An's way of doing things over the past many years. And to achieve today's results, Long An province has implemented synchronous, specific and practical solutions, not following trends or formalities."

Accordingly, the province has done a good job in planning and planning management. From the beginning, Long An proactively established the provincial planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, taking industrial - urban - service development as the center, agriculture as the foundation, and transportation as the breakthrough. This is the guideline to call for investment, regulate infrastructure and allocate resources reasonably between regions.

The second is a breakthrough in transport infrastructure and industrial zones. Without infrastructure, there is no development, so the province prioritizes the budget, seeks the Central Government, and coordinates with businesses to do it together.

Third is substantive administrative reform, with businesses as the center of service. The province has issued many policies to support investment, shorten licensing time, and strongly apply information technology to handle administrative procedures.

Fourth is to attract investment selectively and effectively, not at all costs. Long An prioritizes investors who use high technology, are environmentally friendly, create many jobs, contribute to the budget and are socially responsible.

Fifth is to improve the quality of human resources and care for people's lives. Because, economic development without human development is not sustainable.

Finally and most importantly, the solidarity and consensus of the entire political system and the people. Without the harmonious coordination between the Party, the government, businesses and the people, no results can be sustainable. Words must go hand in hand with actions, actions must be responsible, not formal, not chasing after achievements. That is what has helped Long An grow steadily over the past 50 years - the Chairman of the Long An Provincial People's Committee shared.

Looking back on the 50-year journey, Long An has the right to be proud of what it has achieved. However, according to Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van Ut, the road ahead still has many challenges, there is still much to do, many goals to complete. However, with the spirit of "courage, resilience", through clear, steadfast, and drastic actions, we believe that in the coming time, together with the merger of the province, which will create a new development space, Long An will continue to affirm its role as an important growth pole of the region and a bright spot in the country's development journey.
