Initially launched during the Lunar New Year of 2005, recognizing that many students had to celebrate the New Year away from home due to financial constraints, the Center for Social Work and Student Support at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, decided to organize a Spring Volunteer Campaign to provide meaningful community-oriented activities for those unable to return home for the holiday.
At that time, volunteers collected old calendars to make Braille books for the blind and participated in many meaningful activities such as visiting nursing homes, hospitals, orphanages, and children's shelters, giving gifts, or assisting the elderly and vulnerable with cleaning and decorating their homes for Tet (Lunar New Year). A large-scale volunteer campaign by students in Ho Chi Minh City began with such simple yet warm and sincere actions. From the initial 57 "soldiers," just a few years later, this campaign, deeply rooted in humanistic values, has spread widely throughout the city, becoming a gathering place for thousands of young people every time Tet and spring arrive.
In 2006, the Spring Volunteer Campaign became a school-level initiative, later upgraded to a regional level encompassing six joint schools in the eastern part of the city. By 2009, the Ho Chi Minh City Student Union decided to expand and implement the Spring Volunteer Campaign as a city-wide student initiative. Starting in Ho Chi Minh City, the Spring Volunteer Campaign soon followed students from the Faculty of Humanities to neighboring provinces and cities such as Dak Nong, Binh Phuoc, and Ba Ria-Vung Tau. In 2025, in the program launched on December 22nd, 2024, 70,000 young volunteers will participate in the Spring Volunteer Campaign, double the number from the previous year.
The Spring Volunteer Campaign is an opportunity to promote the pioneering spirit and commitment to community service among the city's youth. Volunteers will work at hospitals, nursing homes, shelters, open houses, special schools, social facilities, student dormitories, accommodation areas, worker housing areas, train stations, bus stations, etc., in Ho Chi Minh City and Thanh An island commune, Can Gio district.
The Spring Volunteer Campaign, in addition to providing an opportunity to demonstrate a proactive spirit and commitment to community service, and creating an environment for young people and students to develop their skills, is also a chance to connect with the community, international students, and young artists who are participating in the campaign. Young people will perform beautiful acts, share civilized lifestyles, and contribute to caring for those in difficult circumstances and with special needs during the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake 2025. For many years, this has also been an environment for young people and students in the city to cultivate their character, abilities, social skills, and international integration.
This year's Spring Volunteer Campaign runs from December 22nd to January 28th, 2025 (corresponding to the 29th day of the 12th lunar month).
For Vietnamese people, Lunar New Year is a time for family reunions, a time for everyone to gather together, share past hardships, and find motivation for the coming year. However, some people are less fortunate and cannot have a warm and joyful family reunion during Tet.
Unity and sharing are noble virtues of the Vietnamese people. The spirit of "helping those in need"—a beautiful gesture of solidarity, sharing, and supporting each other through difficulties and hardships—continues to spread throughout the community. Therefore, when the slogan "Ready - Ready - Ready" is shouted loudly and proudly by the student volunteers, the spring atmosphere brightens in the hearts of each volunteer. That slogan is a source of unwavering strength, motivating the volunteers to bring warmth, faith, and hope to every home.
