Complete loss of vision due to vascular occlusion during filler injection
Viet Duc Friendship Hospital ( Hanoi ) has just received and treated a 45-year-old male patient who had completely lost vision in his left eye after receiving a new generation of filler to remove forehead wrinkles at a private spa facility, introduced by an acquaintance.

According to the patient, at the spa, the person performing the procedure only said that "subcutaneous injection is very simple". Trusting someone who had done it and recommended it, the patient agreed to get a filler injection to rejuvenate (remove wrinkles) the forehead.
However, after only 2-3 injections, the patient had severe pain in the forehead, his left eye quickly blurred, then lost vision, had to stop the injection and go to the hospital for emergency care.
At Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, doctors determined that the patient had central retinal artery occlusion in the left eye, a serious complication caused by incorrect filler injection technique.
The patient was treated aggressively with vasodilators, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-thrombotic drugs and intensive eye interventions. However, after showing signs of improvement and seeing light, the patient's vision continued to deteriorate severely in the following hours. Currently, the possibility of restoring vision is very difficult.
There is no antidote.
According to Associate Professor - Doctor Nguyen Hong Ha, Head of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic and Aesthetics (Viet Duc Friendship Hospital), the type of filler used in this case is a slow-dissolving filler mixture combining two types of filler. One type may have a dissolving injectable antidote (hyaluronic acid) and one type does not have an antidote for dissolving injection.
Therefore, when an accident or complication occurs, the usual antidote injection only dissolves the soluble filler, while the filler without the antidote remains and causes incurable complications.
According to experts, the forehead, bridge of the nose, and around the eyes have a blood vessel system that is directly connected to the eye artery. When filler is injected incorrectly, with too much force, or using an inappropriate type of filler, the filler can penetrate the blood vessels, causing retinal vascular occlusion and also the vessels for muscles, fat, and tissues around the eyeball. Infection, pus tumors, and tissue necrosis can occur.
This is an alarming complication, causing extremely serious consequences.
